Untitled Document Volume II - 1994 Teaching English Through Broadway Musicals by Gina Milano Gina Milano, a graduate of Columbia University, teaches ESL at Hunter College in New York City and at various corporations throughout New Jersey. Fluent in Italian and Spanish, she was a presenter at TESOL Baltimore (1994). Using songs and videos of well known musical plays can be a stimulating alternative for ESL classes at any level of proficiency. Bringing musicals to the classroom provides wonderful opportunities to expand vocabulary and gain familiarity with colloquial expressions and certain grammatical structures. Not to be underestimated is the musical itself. I began working with musicals when I was teaching an elective course entitled "English through Broadway" at Hunter College in New York. I chose eight different musicals that were on commercially available videotapes. Although actual experience with musicals is welcome, any teacher with or without a musical ear can use this method. Just So Stories (version 4) by Rudyard Kipling Rudyard KIPLING (1868 - 1936) The Just So Stories for Little Children are among Kipling's best known and loved works. This recording aims to be the first complete audio book of this title with nothing left out. The Nobel prize-winning author's enjoyment in playing with the sounds and meanings of words is very evident throughout, and adds to adults' enjoyment of these stories for children. This playfulness is also dramatically present in the plotting. As we all are, Kipling was a child of his time and social setting, so for example in "How the Leopard Got his Spots" he uses what one recent reviewer called "the N word" to refer to the Ethiopian. This recording of the Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling includes Kipling's descriptions of the pictures he drew for the book. The stories are fanciful, and not intended to offer historical, scientific or religious accounts of the way things became. So please enjoy them in this reading. Listen to English - learn English! - The podcast website for people learning English This is one of the school meals which Martha Payne photographed for her blog. She had carrot soup, pasta with meat and vegetables and more carrot, and yoghurt. Today we visit Scotland, to find out what a Scottish schoolgirl thinks of her school meals. And because the European Cup Football matches have reached an interesting stage, and poor old England have been knocked out by Italy, this might be a good time to learn a new football expression. Martha Payne is 9 years old. She lives in a small community in Scotland called Lochgilphead. Martha is interested in the food at her school. Children in other schools, and in other countries, started to read Martha’s blog. And at this point, the bureaucrats who run the education system in the part of Scotland where Martha lives became aware of her blog. Martha’s headteacher told Martha the bad news, and Martha was sad and wrote a final blog post to say goodbye to her many readers. I like stories with a happy ending. Categories podcasts Tags
