How To Make a Letterpress Texture Effect in Photoshop

How To Make a Letterpress Texture Effect in Photoshop
I’ve received a few questions recently about how I create the letterpress style texturing that appears on pretty much every retro/vintage design I make. Today’s tutorial will show you a quick and easy way to give your logos and typography that ink stamp style effect that originated from the old letterpress style printing technique. Letterpress printing is an old printing method that transfers ink from a press onto paper, essentially like a rubber stamp. As we all know from playing with rubber and potato stamps as kids this kind of basic printing technique can result in some cool texturing, especially if areas of the printing surface lacks ink. Originally this would be seen as a mistake or flaw in the print, but nowadays we actively seek to fake this kind of texturing to give our artwork an aged and nostalgic appearance. I’m going to be using one of my freely downloadable hipster logos as the base of this tutorial. The actual letterpress effect is created from a texture file. box-shadow Used in casting shadows (often called "Drop Shadows", like in Photoshop) from elements. Here is an example with the deepest possible browser support: Thats: box-shadow: [horizontal offset] [vertical offset] [blur radius] [optional spread radius] [color]; The horizontal offset (required) of the shadow, positive means the shadow will be on the right of the box, a negative offset will put the shadow on the left of the box.The vertical offset (required) of the shadow, a negative one means the box-shadow will be above the box, a positive one means the shadow will be below the box.The blur radius (required), if set to 0 the shadow will be sharp, the higher the number, the more blurred it will be, and the further out the shadow will extend. Using a semi-transparent color like rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4) is most common, and a nice effect, as it doesn't completely/opaquely cover what it's over, but allows what's underneath to show through a bit, like a real shadow. Conclusion

10 Amazing Illustrator Tips That Changed How I Design We’ve all had that mixed feeling of elation and frustration when we discover a new tip or technique in a design app. You’re both amazed at how easy this new technique is while in disbelief that you never knew about it before! I’ve put together a list of the top 10 Illustrator tips I’ve learnt over the years that have completely changed how I design. Hopefully you’ll learn a few new techniques too that will completely transform you every day workflow. Illustrator is all about vector artwork that allows for infinite scalability without loss of quality, so it always leaves you puzzled when your design gets super fat or thin when you alter its size. I used to use the Pathfinder tool for everything! It’s not uncommon to need to draw shapes or details within another object. We all know about CMD+C and CMD+V for Copying and Pasting, but did you know about the Paste in Place (CMD+Shift+V) Paste in Front (CMD+F) and Paste in Back (CMD+B) shortcuts?

Pauline Hayoun Photos : Lucie Smeriglio

Inspiring Typography Designs Based on Cities & States Every place on Earth has its own cultural influence that can be a great source of inspiration for a Designer. This post showcases a range of typographic designs that capture the character of various cities, states and countries from around the world. Cómo mejorar tus fotos con De Color Iluminación Efectos Often when post-processing a photograph the aim is to carefully fine tune the levels and colour balance to capture the real life scene, but sometimes it’s worth taking the edits a little further to enhance an image with hyper realistic effects. Applying colour casts, increasing the contrast and adding lighting effects can give an image an intense mood just like we see in magazines or on billboards. After recently finishing my custom motorcycle project my buddy Ric (Urbanpixels) kindly used his photography skills to take some amazing pics of me and the bike at an old ruined Georgian mansion (see the full collection of shots). Ric did a great job of processing the images from the camera to fine tune the brightness, contrast and color balance, but I fancied playing around to inject a little hyperreality with some moody color casts and epic lens flares to subtly enhance the photo. Here’s the photo I’ll be working with in this tutorial. Next add a Gradient Map adjustment layer.

7 Handmade Textures Tricks As an illustrator and designer, for me it's all about that gritty magic. My work as an illustrator, designer, and art director is heavily inspired by mid-century spot illustrations and design as well as vintage sci-fi, comics, surrealism, DIY art culture, and the textural wonders of degraded print. But, how do you get that look? 1. One trick is to work with a restricted color palette. 2. 3. Want a full look at my behind-the-scenes process?
