De la classification à facettes à la navigation à facettes dans les catalogues Depuis moins de deux ans, s’impose dans les bibliothèques anglo-saxonnes une nouvelle famille d’Opac (Online Public Access Catalog) que réunissent au moins trois points communs : le fait d’être vendus à part, à un prix qui n’a plus rien à voir avec celui de l’Opac classique ; l’adoption de logiques de recherche en rupture avec celles de la génération précédente ; la mise en avant de deux nouveautés, la navigation à facettes et les nuages de mots. Supposés répondre aux besoins des usagers et s’appuyer sur une analyse préalable de leurs pratiques, ces outils semblent parfois complexes lors d’une première utilisation ; la multiplication des cadres (le premier pour des facettes, le deuxième pour des critères de tri, le troisième pour des restrictions par sujet, le quatrième pour un rebond sur des termes associés…) nécessite en effet la maîtrise de concepts que chacun ne situe peut-être pas de manière extrêmement précise. History and Current Use The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system is a general knowledge organization tool that is continuously revised to keep pace with knowledge. The DDC is the most widely used classification system in the world. The DDC has been translated into over thirty languages. Development One of Dewey’s great strengths is that the system is developed and maintained in a national bibliographic agency, the Library of Congress. EPC is a ten-member international board whose main function is to advise the editors and OCLC on matters relating to changes, innovations, and the general development of the Classification. Editions The DDC is published in full and abridged editions in print and electronic versions. Structure and Notation The first summary contains the ten main classes. Cette robuste machine, ancienne, de facture américaine, a fait l’objet en 2015 d’une réédition en langue française dont la rénovation en profondeur, portant sur la traduction elle-même, est à signaler, mobilisant sans relâche une équipe franco-canadienne pendant plus de deux ans pour publier cette 23e édition. Dans quel contexte d’histoire des connaissances l’outil classificatoire Dewey surgit-il ? De quels besoins cette classification décimale procédait-elle ? Passant d’un usage de classement topographique à celui d’une indexation sujet, la CDD utilisée dans 135 pays, traduite en 30 langues, montre aujourd’hui un potentiel utilisable dans de multiples contextes.
