Tame | Welcome Photo of the Day: Young 'Calf' Says, 'I Miss My Mom!' A healthy, happy 8-year-old vegan child wearing a calf costume and holding a sign that read, “I Miss My Mom. Dairy Is Cruel,” led a demonstration recently in Vancouver. The leader of the protest is cute, but her message is serious. Calves on dairy factory farms are torn away from their mothers, often within days of birth. Most female calves are destined for the same fate as their mothers: repeated artificial insemination until their bodies give out and they’re slaughtered for hamburger meat. Drinking milk and consuming other dairy products not only supports animal abuse but also can increase the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and even acne.

North Pinellas News Briefs for Dec. 4 Clearwater Scientology event could close streets The Church of Scientology has asked the city for permission to close some downtown streets and sidewalks for its third major event this fall — its New Year Celebration. The church expects thousands to attend the private party, which will mostly occur in the large tent that has been in place along Court Street since August. Starting on Dec. 27, the celebration "will be a presentation of various activities Scientologists are involved in around the world, as well as a presentation of what the Church plans for the New Year," according to the special events application submitted to the city late last month. In November, the church dedicated the Flag Building, its "spiritual cathedral." The church is asking the city to close Franklin Street from Fort Harrison Avenue to east of Garden Avenue and Garden Avenue from Court to Pierce streets, along with the sidewalks along those streets. The church's event will end on Dec. 31. Safety Harbor Dunedin

analyzing the connections between friends and followers A Look Inside the Angora Rabbit Fur Industry After watching this video, you'll never buy angora again. The undercover footage, shot by PETA Asia, reveals routine cruelty to angora rabbits, whose long, soft fur is often used in sweaters and accessories. The investigator filmed workers who were violently ripping the fur from the animals' sensitive skin as they screamed at the top of their lungs in pain. After this terrifying and barbaric ordeal, which the rabbits endure every three months, many of them appeared to go into severe shock. After two to five years, those who have survived are hung upside down, their throats are slit, and their carcasses are sold. Rabbits who have their fur cut or sheared also suffer: During the cutting process, their front and back legs are tightly tethered—a terrifying experience for any prey animal—and the sharp cutting tools inevitably wound them as they struggle desperately to escape. Rabbits are gentle, socially complex, and intelligent animals with individual personalities, just like dogs and cats.
