Galaxy Zoo: Hubble Flame Painter | free online paint program Flame Painter Gallery Flame Painter is a unique paint program, it belongs to my 'I am an Artist' experimental project. I think with tools which inspires you, everyone can be an artist. You can try it here, change different brush settings and paint your own flame paintings. When you change the background from black to white, the palette changes from additive to subtractive and the feeling of the painting is very different. Tools: Click here for Flame Help in German . The Sounds of Pulsars A pulsar is a highly magnetised neutron star, with a radius of 10-15 km, having somewhat greater mass than the Sun which has a radius of approximately 1 million km. Radiation is beamed out along the magnetic poles and pulses of radiation are received as the beam crosses the Earth, in the same manner as the beam from a lighthouse causes flashes. Being enormous cosmic flywheels with a tick attached, they make some of the best clocks known to mankind. These sounds directly correspond to the radio-waves emitted by the brightest pulsars in the sky as received by some of the largest radio telescopes in the world. 3D Solar System Khmer/Cambodian alphabet, pronunciation and language The Khmer alphabet is descended from the Brahmi script of ancient India by way of the Pallava script, which was used in southern India and South East Asia during the 5th and 6th Centuries AD. The oldest dated inscription in Khmer, found at Angkor Borei in Takev Province south of Phnom Penh, dates from 611 AD. The Khmer alphabet closely resembles the Thai and Lao alphabets, which developed from it. Notable features This is syllabic alphabet in which each consonant has two forms, one with an inherent /a/ (first series) and one with an inherent /o/ (second series) Vowels are indicated using either separate letters or diacritics, which written above, below, in front of, after or around consonants. The pronunciation of the vowels depends on whether a consonant they are attached to is of the first or second series. Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2016 April 15 Mercury and Crescent Moon Set Image Credit & Copyright: Miguel Claro (TWAN, Dark Sky Alqueva) Explanation: Innermost planet Mercury and a thin crescent Moon are never found far from the Sun in planet Earth's skies. Taken near dusk on April 8, this colorful evening skyscape shows them both setting toward the western horizon just after the Sun. Ensign Software - ESPL: Dances of the Planets The planets in the heavens move in exquisite orbital patterns, dancing to the Music of the Cosmos. There is more mathematical and geometric harmony than we realize. The idea for this article is from a book Larry Pesavento shared with me. The book, 'A Little Book of Coincidence' by John Martineau, illustrates the orbital patterns and several of their geometrical relationships. . Take the orbits of any two planets and draw a line between the two planet positions every few days. Earth: 8 years * 365.256 days/year = 2,922.05 days Venus: 13 years * 224.701 days/year = 2,921.11 days (ie. 99.9%) Watching the Earth-Venus dance for eight years creates this beautiful five-petal flower with the Sun at the center. (5 is another Fibonacci number.) Another intriguing fact is the ratio between the Earth's outer orbit and Venus's inner orbit is given by a square. In the following dance patterns, the planet pairing is given and the number of orbits of the outer planet. Article by Howard Arrington

RuSpace | Soyuz console Fighter jet and spaceship cockpits seem to fascinate me and that of the Soyuz is no exception; unfortunately there are no detailed diagrams or manuals publically-available on the Internet that I know of! The following diagrams are ones I have collected from various places, and are the best I can do at the moment. The Soyuz TM Information Display System is called the “Neptune”, «Нептун»; for the TMA it is the Neptune ME. Some of the buttons and controls on the console can’t be reached without a stick to poke at them! The computer used on the Soyuz is called Argon, «Аргон». Some of the Russian translations below are uncertain or unclear (I couldn’t find exact definitions for them). Cosmology Mayan Numbers Count with Mayan numbers How Mayan numbers worked The Mayan system is interesting as they developed it without any contact with the other systems on this website. It is similar to the Babylonians but the Mayans chose different numbers as their bases. They used dots to represent numbers under five, so four is four dots. This works up to nineteen, but rather than twenty being four lines, they started a new count above the first one. To calculate a Mayan number, you need to divide the number into powers of twenty. The great advantage of the positional system is that you need only a limited number of symbols (the Mayans only had two, plus their symbol for zero) and you can represent any whole number, however big. The Mayan had a second Number System, used for dating buildings and on Calendars, etc. © Jo Edkins 2006 - Return to Numbers index

NASA Astrobiology The Beginning, The End, and all that In Between by sethbernard87 | LOST Theories The epic story of LOST has come to a close. For the past year, this ending was heavy on my mind, as well as the millions of other avid LOST fans around the world. And for all others, our obsession for this show seemed almost comical that we would invest such energy at attempting to dissect each weeks story line. "Everyone dies sooner or later, kiddo...some died before you, some long after." This side-ways reality was just the place in which one goes after death, before they are able to move on. For example, the line "some died before you, some long after" tells us that even though most of our main characters have met back up with each other around the same time in this flash-sideways, some have been in this place long before others. And that's what's great about this ending. Once each character realized their previous life, their existence and subsequent death, they began to cry with joy. Our story of these people we have come to know so well has now come full circle.
