This is will introduce my personal approach and techniques for scratch building and ageing buildings, pertaining to the typical northern French urban landscape of the 1940s and early 50s. I believe that a proper rendition of textures and adequate weathering of the different elements is important when making a miniature scene, where the optimal development of each small detail of a diorama becomes more a necessity to modellers who want to show, with utmost realism, models that are better detailed and weathered I will explain stage by stage in future articles how to create peculiar materials and elements and how to give the models ‘life’ while employing generic methods. Making Paper Roses Have fun creating long stem roses with your favorite scrapbook paper, for gifts or home decor. This project requires patience and time. It is not quick or simple, but once you get the hang of it, can be addicting. Supplies:Patterned paper-one 12 x 12″ sheet. These directions will give you one flower. 1. 4. 5. Tip: For single sided paper. 6. Note: Florist tape is stretchy, just play with it and pull gently but firmly as you move down the stem. 7. Tree-Stump Trivet As you wrap the felt strips, keep one side of the trivet flat, but don't worry if the reverse is uneven (that side can face the table). wind-up paper butterflies are my fave (guest post from amelia) I had a baby so I’ve invited some fave guests to take over for me while I spend time with the little guy. Today’s post is from super crafter and cute mom, Amelia of The Homebook. Growing up, I had an aunt who lived in Canada. Every year for my birthday she’d send me a card and a fancy little gift. I made my butterflies into Monarchs, but you could use different materials to create any sort of colorful butterfly. Materials: You’ll need heavy cardstock, 24 gauge wire, silicone rubber bands (I found mine in the hair aisle at Walgreens) needle-nose pliers, scissors, tape, a paintbrush, a black marker, and a white ink pen. Step 1: Measure and cut your wire. Step 2: Find the center of the longer wire. Step 5: Find the center of the shorter wire, and wrap it around the base of the paintbrush. Braided Rag Rug please click here for kits available to make this rag rug 1 honey bun of your choice (featured is “sweet” by urban chiks) and 4 yards of white fabric cut your 4 yards of white fabric to 1 1/2 inch widths (yup ALL of it) once it’s all cut up get three strips of fabric and sew them stacked on top of each other (i wanted the middle of my rug to be all white) safety pin your three sewn strips anywhere you can be comfy (you are going to be there for a while! start braiding your white fabric****EDITED**** ****you need to make sure your braiding is SUPER LOOSE. do notmake your braids tight at all. if they are tight they will make your rag rug curl up when you try to sew it together once you get close to the end of your braid you are going to fold over the end of your strip and snip with your scissors a slit. like so, and then you will do the same to the next strip that will be the following strip to lengthen your braid (do this to each of the three strips) look what you made!

This is technically just “melt and pour” soap so it might be considered cheating to some hard-core soap enthusiasts but I’m not about to mess with lye or distilling vodka when I’ve got a small child acting as my personal assistant. First you’ll cut up the glycerine into 1-inch chunks. Don’t be fooled by the picture above. After you’ve poured the glycerine, let it cool just enough to form a thin skin on the top. After all your toys are arranged, you can add your snow. Next you’ll pop it in the freezer for about twenty minutes or until the cubes are cool to touch from the underside of the ice cube tray (be sure to check the middle). I used a small paring knife to shave off some of the irregularities on the bottom but that was purely aesthetic.

Not surprisingly they are quite fun, smooshing the glue out to make a perfect little magnified image is very satisfying. I bought 1/2″ and 3/4″ round (strong) magnets (in with the frames, near the corks); 1/2″ and 3/4″ clear flat glass marbles (in the fake flowers aisle, check the mosaics section too); silicon sealer made by the Crazy Glue people (in the glue aisle). These are great packaged in those Altoid-sized tins, I’ve seen them in office/gift shops like that.
