LIVEN UP CLASSROOM WITH MUSIC My Workshop at Bilgi University In the session, I talked about why we should use songs in EFL classes. Music is everywhere in our lives. We listen to songs when we are happy, angry, sad or when we need inspiration or when we want to relax. We go out of our homes with our songs, we travel with them, we wait with them, we shop with them. So we can teach with them. Music can be used to teach grammar : at the presentation stage of a grammar point or while reviewing listening : gap fill exercises, matching to teach listening for gist or detail vocabulary: to teach or increase vocab by asking your students to replace the words with a synonym, antonym or a near synonym. reading: songs are authentic texts and they can be used for comprehension, discussion and teaching culture writing: you can use songs for teaching writing. While doing all these we can always use web 2.0 to motivate our students so they can add their own content to the material. Musical Reactions Play an instrumental piece. 1.

Shotcut Lyric Race Here is a fun activity I’ve learned recently which can be used with songs. It sounds it will work well with young learners yet sometimes the teenagers also would like to do something like this. • Choose some words from the song you will use in the class and prepare word cards. Stick the words to the board. • Divide students into two teams (or groups if you have a big class). Work with the words for a while. • When the class is ready tell them each team will stand in a line in front of the board. • Play the song. • When a student at the front of the line hears a word in the song, s/he runs to the board and takes the card for the team. • Game continues until all the words have been removed from the board. • The team with the most cards wins. • Give each team a copy of the lyrics with blanks. image credit :

20+ Activities and Resources for Teaching Language Through Song Lyrics Music is the soul of language. ~ Max Heindel I am very interested in what motivates students to learn English. In conversations outside my classroom, I often ask language learners how and why they learned English. No matter what the age, I have found music to be a very powerful motivational tool for learning a language. For example, a friend of mine from Korea told me she learned English by studying the lyrics to her favorite English songs. helps students learn language and even grammar in chunksis all around us. 10+ Activity Ideas and Resources It’s Music in Our Schools Month! The Best Online Karaoke Sites For English Language Learners I’ve used music a lot with English Language Learners. Singing feels much less threatening to many who are learning a new language. Karaoke is a good language-development activity, and there are quite a few karaoke sites on the Internet. In order to make it on this list, a site has to be available free-of-charge (or at least some of its resources have to be free), easy-to-use, require no download, and allow students — either alone or in a group — to record themselves singing. There are only a few sites that meet that criteria. SMS Tunes is another similar site. Sing Snap is the newest addition to this list. KaraSongs doesn’t allow students to record themselves, but they have tons of great videos showing the lyrics to popular songs with instrumental accompaniment.
