Put on Your Thinking Caps | Math by Design Resources: Instruction: Math Project: Discourse Discourse in mathematics instruction refers to the verbal interchange of ideas – both written and oral ways of representing, thinking, and communicating – that teachers and students use as they perform mathematical tasks. By orchestrating and promoting discourse, teachers can actively engage students in mathematical thinking. In discourse-rich mathematics classes, students explain and discuss the strategies and processes they use in solving mathematical problems, thereby connecting their own everyday language with the specialized vocabulary of mathematics. Through discourse, teachers can better understand the mathematical needs of the class—what the students know, misconceptions they may have, and how these might have developed. Building Options for Discourse From 2008 to 2011, SCOE and the California Math Project: North Coast (CMP:NC) worked with local teachers to develop effective classroom strategies to increase the academic engagement of all learners. Guided Math: Getting Started Let me say this first and foremost... The first several weeks are critical in correctly teaching students the procedures and expectations for guided math. Not following through or cutting corners can lead to frustration and guided math failure. As most teachers know the key to a good system is practice, practice, practice.

Fun Kids Online Math Games "Sheppard offers everything from early math to pre-algebra. The lessons include interactive activities to practice concepts. Students can shoot fruit, pop balloons, and even play math man (the math version of pac man!). Fractions, place value, money, and basic operations are some of the areas that are covered. Check it out at " --Shannon Jakeman , sjakeman.blogspot.com "Online math games, like the ones that you'll find for free at Sheppard Software, provide a valuable opportunity for children to learn a great deal while they're having fun. It can be very difficult for parents to find productive and worthwhile activities for children on the Internet; however fun online math games do offer a wonderful alternative. This free section of Sheppard Software was written for children. Sheppard Software offers a couple of cute games for the youngest math students.

3D Shapes . Polyhedron There are many types of three-dimensional shapes. You've surely seen spheres and cubes before. In this lesson, you'll learn about polyhedra — three-dimensional shapes whose faces are polygons — and you'll also learn about two special types of polyhedra: prisms and pyramids. Polyhedra A die is in the shape of a cube. A three-dimensional shape whose faces are polygons is known as a polyhedron. The faces of a cube are squares. The other parts of a polyhedron are its edges, the line segments along which two faces intersect, and its vertices, the points at which three or more faces meet. Next: Explore PrismsExplore Prisms
