Theodore Roosevelt: The Man in the Arena If you’ve been reading AoM for awhile, you’ll know that we’re big, big fans of Theodore Roosevelt. TR’s life shows us that hard work, tenacity, and a desire to do the right thing can get you far in life. In the most memorable section of his “Citizenship in a Republic” speech, Roosevelt captured his life philosophy in just a few sentences. “The Man in the Arena” tells us that the man we should praise is the man who’s out there fighting the big battles, even if those battles end in defeat. In our day, when cynicism and aloof detachment are considered hip and cool, TR reminds us that glory and honor come to those “who spend themselves in a worthy cause.” It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. Fast Company’s four-hour interview with the director for the December-January cover story was ostensibly about his career, and how he had been able to stay so creative through years of battling studios. Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development | SME internationalization research: past, present, and future Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the similarities and differences in the internationalization of SMEs and MNEs and the specific factors affecting them. Design/methodology/approach – The relevant literature was reviewed particularly in the context of the major theories of internationalization. Findings – The positive and negative aspects of each theoretical approach to internationalization are present to form the basis of a new model of international entrepreneurship. Research limitations/implications – The newly developed conceptual model has not been empirically tested. Originality/value – A redeveloped theoretical integrative conceptual model of international entrepreneurship is proposed based on four internationalization properties (mode, market, product, and time), internationalization performance, and key antecedents and consequences of the internationalization process.
