4 Ways to Quiet the Negative Voice Inside You

4 Ways to Quiet the Negative Voice Inside You
Email There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative. ―W. Clement Stone Why do we think negatively when we know better? Because thinking negatively, expecting “the worst,” seeing the downside of positive situations, and even downright expecting failure, all convey a kind of backwards-thinking, emotional insurance policy. Our desire to want to be right is another common reason we subconsciously choose negative thinking. Of course, none of this is what we truly want or need in our lives. 1. Life simply isn’t black or white – 100% of this or 100% of that – all or nothing. Rather than the rainstorm slowing down my commute home from work, instead “it wasted my whole evening and ruined my night!” Make the realistic-case outcome as detailed and long as you like, or list more than one realistic-case outcome. 2. “…he’s extremely busy at work.” 3. 4. Fortune Favors the Bold: Communicating at Virgin Atlantic, by Adam Schair I recently went to a highly entertaining and informative IABC Westfair talk given by Jenna Lloyd, Virgin Atlantic Marketing Director, about communications at a company borne from Richard Branson’s innovative mind, created with the sole purpose of shaking up an industry. In fact, Jenna’s talk was called “Flying in the Face of Ordinary to create a communication culture.” The following is a summary of the five points of her talk, which were categorized by paraphrased quotes from Richard Branson himself. 1. She said that this quote really captured the essence of how they approach communications at Virgin Atlantic. 2. 3. 4. 5.

9 Things You Should NOT Have to Give Up to Be Happy Email “All happiness depends on courage and work.” ―Honoré de Balzac “This morning my best friend, Karl, confided in me that he’s having trouble playing a depressed character in our school’s end of the semester play. ‘Call me one of the lucky ones,’ he said. ‘But I just have no emotional tie to the role, and I know it’s hurting the quality of the character I’m trying to portray.’ Those are the opening lines to an email I received this morning from a reader named Darin. Darrin’s words hit home with me, not only because I once let a high school bully get the best of me, but because I know all of us, in all walks of life, have taken a wrong turn in the pursuit of happiness a time or two. So my hope is that this post helps serve as a reminder: Although sacrifices must be made, you should not have to give up… Final Reminder: Have you checked out our book? 1. Do your best to be as good as you can be, and if that’s not enough for someone, it surely will be for someone else. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Berry Crisp A simple berry crisp made with fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries creates the perfect summer dessert. I feel like it’s officially Summer. The temps are soarin’ and there’s ample sunshine followed by crazy thunderstorms – all signs of Summer in Ohio. I always feel like my life gets a lot simpler at this time of year. I’m off of work, flips flops and tee shirts become wardrobe staples and I’m perfectly content with a big bowl of fruit for dinner – especially if berries and juicy watermelon are involved. I’ve mentioned before that Eric and I subscribe to an organic produce delivery service, and last week I found myself overdoing it in the berry department. Loads of fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries combine with a sweet and crunchy crisp topping to make an easy breezy dessert that just screams Summer. After making this crisp twice in one week – yes, twice – I resorted to scooping some of it over plain yogurt for breakfast.

20 Things to Stop Letting People Do to You post written by: Marc Chernoff Email Be with those who bring out the best in you, not the stress in you. This past Sunday, while we were enjoying an afternoon barbeque at our friend Sara’s house, her 16-year-old foster child, Cody, received a visit from his biological mother – a woman who has been in and out of prison and rehab her whole life. Cody’s mother was extremely rough around the edges and almost immediately started bringing up hurtful memories from the past, and then told him, “I wish I could go back in time and raise you again, to change who you are and give you a better upbringing.” Cody’s response impressed me on so many levels. So whenever you’re dealing with a difficult or hostile person, remember how Cody handled himself. It’s time to… Stop letting people drag you into needless arguments. – Never waste your time trying to explain yourself to people who have proven that they are committed to misunderstanding you. The floor is yours… What would you add to the list?
