Open Ebooks Initiative DPLA & Ebooks / Curation Corps / Ebooks Working Group / Open Ebooks Initiative The Open eBooks initiative was announced by President Obama at a ConnectED event that was held at Anacostia Library in Washington, DC on April 30, 2015. Open eBooks is a partnership between three existing nonprofits (New York Public Library, Digital Public Library of America, and First Book), with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and was made possible by the generous commitments of publishers. Open eBooks adds to existing efforts to help kids develop a love of reading and discovery by making eBooks available to children and youth from low-income families. About the Open Ebooks Initiative What is Open eBooks? DPLA’s national network of librarians and cultural heritage organizations will help coordinate books for inclusion in the program. Publicado en Junio 5, 2015 por julio El 30 de abril de 2015 el presidente Obama anunció en un evento en línea que se celebró en la Biblioteca Anacostia en Washington, el desarrollo de la iniciativa Open Ebooks Initiative con el objetivo de coordinar esfuerzos para ayudar a los niños a desarrollar el amor por la lectura y el descubrimiento, facilitando el acceso a libros electrónicos a disposición de los jóvenes de familias de bajos ingresos.. En la iniciativa participan -bajo la dirección y la coordinación del Instituto de Servicios de Museos y Bibliotecas- tres organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro. Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), the New York Public Library, y First Book. Open Ebooks Initiative permitirá el acceso gratis a cientos de títulos para todos los niños, tanto de proyectos editoriales como de dominio público. DPLA se encargará de seleccionar la colección para asegurar un conjunto diverso, adecuado y convincente para que todos los niños puedan leer, aprender y disfrutar.

Advancing Portable Documents for the Open Web Platform: EPUB+WEB
Our Vision Our vision for EPUB+WEB is that portable documents become fully native citizens of the Open Web Platform. In this vision, the current format- and workflow-level separation between offline/portable (EPUB) and online (Web) document publishing is diminished to zero. A portable document is a collection of content items (e.g. pages, chapters, modules, articles) structured as a single, self-contained logical unit. Several portable document formats exist. EPUB can be viewed as simply defining a specialization of Web content that assures that a collection of content items has the needed properties of completeness and logical structure, and does so in a standard way that other processing tools and services can reliably create, manipulate, and present such collections. The differences between the distinguishing characteristics of web documents and portable document can be viewed as situational and gradual rather than as representative of bright-line distinctions. Las ventas de ejemplares en papel crecen por primera vez desde 2007 y suben un 4,6% Los funerales por el papel suelen ser casi siempre precipitados. Hace cinco años, el estadounidense Nicholas Negroponte, gurú y fundador del MIT Media Lab, vaticinó con gran suficiencia que en noviembre de 2015, es decir, el mes que viene, se publicarían los últimos periódicos de papel. Es evidente que no dio una, aunque nunca pedirá disculpas. El libro ha sido también víctima recurrente de profecías de extinción, que vaticinaron un rápido trasvase del grueso del público a tabletas de lectura tipo el Kindle de Amazon, menos pesadas y que permiten llevar en la mano toda una biblioteca. Pero la galaxia Gutenberg parece que aguanta. La cadena de tiendas de libros y Amazon iniciaron en 2012 su colaboración para la venta de los aparatos lectores de los llamados «e-books», pero el negocio parece que no ha funcionado.
