The rat trap, when tripped, breaks the glowstick and causes it to illuminate. I started by painting the rat trap OD green because, as everyone knows, painting it this color makes it 40% more awesome. A home or community with dead soil, won’t help you survive an economic winter or supply disruptions. It’s a technique called Hugelkultur . It’s from a brilliant German permaculture (a way of designing living ecosystems to eliminate the need for external inputs) engineer called Sepp Holzer, although he started doing this well before the permaculture brand emerged. What is it? Here’s a picture that provides a nice overview of the technique: HugelKultur in a Nutshell The goal here is soil so alive and self sufficient that it doesn’t require fertilizer, mechanical tilling, or much water. The rotting of the wood warms the soil (increasing growing times), fertilizes the soil, and keeps the soil moist.
