PHILIP WARD'S A LIFETIME READING: THE WORLD'S 500 GREATEST BOOKS Philip Ward (1938-) is a librarian, scholar, editor and author of more than 50 books. His A Lifetime's Reading: The World's 500 Greatest Books provides an ambitious plan to guide reader's through the great books. He explains his purpose in writing the book as follows: " Like most professional librarians, I have at one time or another glanced across a library to see a man or woman of eighteen to twenty daunted - even bewildered - by the sheer richness of the library treasures that are waiting to be enjoyed, the great minds to be understood, the poet's voices to be heard, the characters of fiction to be encountered. My heart has been touched by the magnitude of their choice. I long to offer them the plays of Euripides and the stories of Isaac Babel, the love songs of Dante and the wisdom of Mencius. But I know help must be given only when sought.

How To Get A Liberal Arts Education (Without Going To University) Even though Liberal Arts degrees typically fall at the bottom of the education hierarchy, I think it’s one of the most valuable educations for the future. Why? Because nobody can predict which job skills will stay in-demand in the future but what we do know we will need lots of people who are flexible, have wide understanding of the world and are excellent communicators. The Liberal Arts has a bad reputation because it often attracts the slackers who go to University more for the country club atmosphere, the keg parties or because their parents gave them no other option. In computer science, math or sciences you can fall behind very quickly if you don’t do the daily work but in the Liberal Arts many people succeed at “bullshiting” their way through a degree with last minute essays and cramming right before exams. However, if you really dedicate yourself to studying the Liberal Arts it can be one of the most challenging degrees.

SCHOOLS The Great Law of Peace is the oldest constitution in North America defining a system of participatory democracy that has sustained the Iroquois Confederacy for perhaps 1,000 years. At a time of terrible war, say tribal elders, a Great Peacemaker emerged to inspire the warriors to bury their weapons of war (the origins of the saying, "to bury the hatchet"). The Peacemaker planted on top of the weapons a sacred Tree of Peace and established a code of laws called Kaianerekowa, the Great Law of Peace. Mohawk Wolf Clan Chief Jake Swamp explained: "The powerful story of the birth of democracy began long, long ago.
