Silicon Valley

History - Part 3 (The Rise of Silicon Valley): Stanford University In 1939, with the encouragement of their professor and mentor, Frederick Terman, Stanford alumni David Packard and William Hewlett established a little electronics company in a Palo Alto garage. That garage would later be dubbed "the Birthplace of Silicon Valley." Over the following years, Stanford would be a wellspring of innovation, producing advances in research and the formation of many companies that have made Silicon Valley one of the most innovative and productive high-tech regions in the world. In 1947, professor William W. Under the leadership of Terman, a professor of electrical engineering who served as provost from 1955 to 1965, the university embarked upon a campaign to build “steeples of excellence,” clusters of outstanding science and engineering researchers who would attract the best students. The Internet, of course, is central to the story of Silicon Valley.

The region is home to many of the world's largest technology companies including Apple, Cisco, Google, HP, Intel and Oracle. The term originally referred to the region's large number of silicon chip innovators and manufacturers, but eventually came to refer to all the high-tech businesses in the area; it is now generally used as a metonym for the American high-tech sector. Despite the development of other high-tech economic centers throughout the United States and the world, Silicon Valley continues to be the leading hub for high-tech innovation and development, accounting for 1/3 of all of the venture capital investment in the United States. Since the early twentieth century, Silicon Valley has been home to a vibrant, growing electronics industry. Techmeme SciGuy: Steorn and free energy: the plot t Steorn has now posted a slick, five-minute video that features interviews with company CEO Sean McCarthy as well as the company’s marketing director. For more background, see our earlier discussion. Like I said, the video’s slick, and not too heavy on scientific detail. McCarthy: The first roadblock is science. The video explains that a “quiet” campaign was plan A. McCarthy: The claim does rail against so much thinking from ordinary people, through the engineering community to the academic community, it’s a prerequisite that this is accepted by science, and that this is embraced by science. Then, he concludes by saying it’s Steorn against the world. McCarthy: We have to fight public opinion, we have to fight the scientific community and we have to fight the energy industry. The more I think about this I am of two minds: 1. 2. (Other points of discussion: ILikeYourStyle, Archaeoastronomy, and Engadget.)

TechCrunch 4G-Satellite Network Planned for US Next Year - CIO.com - Business Technology Leadership IDG News Service — An investment company has hired Nokia Siemens Networks to build a hybrid 4G-satellite mobile network, called LightSquared, across the U.S. to go live next year. Harbinger Capital Partners, which earlier this year acquired satellite phone service provider SkyTerra, announced on Tuesday it will pay NSN more than US$7 billion over eight years to design, build and operate the network. LightSquared will reach 92 percent of the U.S. population by 2015, the company said. Harbinger will not offer a service on the LightSquared network itself but will sell access to it on a wholesale basis, allowing for a variety of service providers that could include mobile carriers, cable operators, device makers, retailers and content creators. The rapidly growing demand for mobile broadband makes a new 4G network seem promising, especially if it can reach poorly served rural areas via satellite. "Those cool buzzwords bring a lot of uncertainty," Jarich said.

Silicon Valley facts, information, pictures Dictionary of American History COPYRIGHT 2003 The Gale Group Inc. SILICON VALLEY, located around Santa Clara and San Jose, California, is the home of many key U.S. corporations that specialize in advanced electronic and information technologies. First called "Silicon Valley" in 1971 by a local newsletter writer, Donald C. Hoefler, the "Valley" became the center of newly developing technologies that many believed would revolutionize computers, telecommunications, manufacturing procedures, warfare, and even U.S. society itself. If there was a single founder of Silicon Valley it was William Shockley, an English-born physicist who worked on early concepts of the transistor at Bell Laboratories before World War II and who went on to become the director of Bell's Transistor Physics Research Group. To many observers the California location was central to the success and, later, the problems of Silicon Valley. Findlay, John M. Forester, Tom. Saxby, Stephen. Teitelman, Robert.
