A newbie's guide to UAVs What is an amateur UAV? An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is an aircraft that has the capability of autonomous flight, without a pilot in control. Amateur UAVs are non-military and non-commercial. They typically fly under “recreational” exceptions to FAA regulations on UAVs, so long as the pilots/programmers keep them within tight limits on altitude and distance. What do I need to make one? ---1) An RC plane, muticopter (quadcopter/hexacopter/tricopter, etc) or helicopter. What does DIY Drones have to offer? The DIY Drones community has created the world's first "universal autopilots", ArduPilot Mega (APM) and its next-generation big brother, Pixhawk. A full setup consists of: Pixhawk autopilot: The electronics, including twin processors, gyros, accelerometers, pressure sensors, GPS and more (shown at right). You can buy Ready-to-Fly UAVs (both planes and multicopters) from 3D Robotics: Last but not least is flight safety. Also, here's the FAA's official word on what's legal and what's not.

Moon Shot by WilliamAAdams Inspired by Bre's Moon crater, I thought, why not the whole moon? This thing is a bump mapped sphere that uses the planetary map data/images from here: johnstonsarchive.net/spaceart/cylmaps.html Specifically, I used this one: johnstonsarchive.net/spaceart/moonbumpmap2.jpg I essentially used the same bump mapping technique I used on this bowl: thingiverse.com/thing:13991 That is, use the picture as a height map. Now came the special part. So, I cracked it open, and found that it was in fact hollow! And lastly, since I was exploring the surface using MeshLab, I finally found the man in the moon. This has got to be great for science exploration! A bit about the .stl files. To generate any spherical thing, you would just change one line of code in the .fab file: local heightsampler = ImageSampler.new({ Filename='moonbumpmap2_720_360.png', Size = size, Resolution = res, MaxHeight=16, }) Change "Filename = ' This is the quick and dirty form of Bump/Height mapping.

Proxxon MF70 CNC Conversion Kit by ttsalo First, while printing the motor mounts, it's a good idea to do a google search with "mf70 cnc" and read some of the top results - many people have written better illustrated guides than fits here. Take off the handwheels from the mill. For X- and Y-axis this is done by loosening the nut at the far end of the axis (note! the Y-axis has left-handed threads) and pulling the axis out far enough so that you can punch out the holding pin. Next thing needed is a coupler for each axis. In the original design, the handwheels themselves push against the bearings. X- and Y-axis motor mounts can then be attached. After the mounts are in place, the couplers attached and the axis nuts tightened to take out the play, the NEMA17 motors with 20mm shafts can be mounted with M3x12 screws. If everything still moves smoothly, it's time to hook up the electronics. It's possible to use RepRap electronics. The zipfile contains all the three STLs. I also concluded that the PTFE spacers are too much of a hack.

The B9Creator™ can build objects as large as belt buckles or as detailed as a tiny filigree ring, with precision typically possible only on machines costing three to five times as much. In addition, because DLP technology exposes an entire build layer at a time, total build times for most objects is normally between two to five times faster than other comparable technologies. Another unique advantage of this system is that the output resin, unlike that of photo-polymers in general, is proven to be directly castable when cured properly. The B9Creator™ will be initially offered in two versions, as a kit which will require user assembly for US$2,990, and as an assembled machine including some consumables and extra parts for US$4,995.

B9Creator - A High Resolution 3D Printer by Michael Joyce Color Voting Update - 06/11/12 at 6:11 AM MST The Voting is Over, we have a winner! Black - 32, Blue -11, Clear - 9, Red - 2, Gold - 2, Green - 1 Right from the beginning I wanted the B9Creator to be different. DIY 3D Printers based upon the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) concept simply can not match the higher resolution capability of the B9Creator. How about speed? "But how much does that resin cost?" As you will see below, the project development is already well along and is about set for production. So... (Eiffel Tower model printed at 100 micron resolution) I began working on this concept last fall. (Working on resin development) (Trying out different ideas) (Youtube video describing early design concept) (Final R&D prototype.. it works!) (Production design using CAD) (Final production design, CAD rendering) (The assembled production prototype) (Custom components fabricated by my US based vendors) - Assemble and ship kits and completed units starting as soon as components arrive.
