Simple timelapse camera using Raspberry Pi and a coffee tin Whilst developing BerryCam I thought it would be pretty cool to create a timelapse camera that could be left outdoors over a period of time, to capture a sequence of images that could be later joined together into a video clip. From the outset thoughts turned to housing everything in an ‘Illy’ coffee tin as it was pretty robust, watertight and could easily contain the Raspberry Pi and battery pack. Home automation with RC wall plugs and Raspberry Pi [Jake] took some cheap hardware and figured out a way to use it as a huge home automation network. He’s chose a Raspberry Pi board to connect the radio controlled power outlets to his network. He wrote about his project in two parts, the first is hacking the RC outlet controller and the second is using the Raspberry Pi to manipulate it. These RC outlets are a pass-through for appliances that connect to mains (lamps, consumer electronics, christmas trees, etc). Some of the inspiration for this hack came from the whistle-controlled appliance hack.

Automated Chicken Coop Door If you had any doubts that SiliconFarmer has an actual farm, this project should dispel them. We got six chickens last year. I built them a nice coop. It sits about 100 feet from the house, and has wheels so we can occasionally move it. Chickens like to be in the coop at night. This means someone has to go out early in the morning to open the coop, or they get noisy and start pecking each other. Anyway, this gets old after a while. The first problem was deciding what sort of motor and mechanism to use. He also suggested using an arm and pulley mechanism so the motor could be run in just one direction to both open and close the door. These motors have an integrated switch, which allows my controller to determine when the motor is positioned with the door completely closed. The completely open position isn’t as critical. First thing I did was figure out which leads ran the motor, and which was the feedback switch. One lead is common, two leads are power for slow and fast speeds.
