The Bureau of Communication - Fill-in-the-blank Correspondence Learn to write Gallifreyan in 9 simple steps I could be wrong, but I thought Mayan script was made up of symbols that represent a word, a syllable, or, in some cases, multiple words and/or syllables. That is, a single glyph could mean "dog" or the syllable "ah", depending on context. (Totally a made up example, I only vaguely remember this from linguistics 101 years and years ago.) Well, perhaps Chinese pictograms are a better example then. Aren't some Chinese pictorgrams built up in this same, layered way? Especially when they are first developed? I realize that as the Chinese written language slowly evolves, writers may simplify some glyphs so it's not obvious where they originally came from, but isn't this Gallifreyan technique similar to how Chinese does it? You mean a single ideogram, rather than a word composed of multiple characters where they have a collective meaning?
