The Disruption Higher Ed Doesn’t See Coming (and how it could respond, even lead, but probably won’t) No, not MOOCs. Badges. Ok, now that you’ve stopped laughing (I admit, even I have a hard time not dismissively thinking of the sleeves of my Cub Scout shirt when I hear the term) let me explain why badges, as they mature beyond where they are currently, have the potential to disrupt formal education in a way that none of the technology innovations we’ve seen in the last couple of decades have. Over those two decades, essentially the duration of my working life so far, every time I have tried to explain the magnitude of the disruptions (and the amount of potentials) that the network presents to formal education institutions (especially post secondary ones) the trump card interlocuters ALWAYS bring out to minimize the potential threat is “Accreditation.” Again, I’ll give you a second to stop laughing. But I contend that’s because, so far, badges haven’t tackled THE important problem, at scale, in a way that models how the net works – who do we trust and why? What is Accreditation Anyways?
Moodle Gamification, Badges & Mobile | Moodle User Guide When learners are engaged with their material, training effectiveness skyrockets. Gamification is one of the most effective ways to encourage learner engagement. According to market intelligence company Newzoo, there are more than 2 billion video game players worldwide and the video game industry is worth 100 billion today and growing. Progressive educators have caught onto this game by incorporating elements of video gaming into their instructional design. The approach taps into the human reward center to help build engagement. Gamification offers the learner the option to learn through failure as well, allowing them to learn by trying things, exploring if it works, failing and trying it again. Gamification stimulates two basic psychological human needs: the first is a need for competence (a desire to seek out control or to feel mastery over a situation) and secondly, autonomy (the desire to feel independent or have a certain amount of control over our actions). OpenBadges.me Integrating the badge designer We've built our badge designer so that it can plug easily into other software applications. The designer can be launched seamlessly from your own tools, allowing for rich graphics to be created, and then a published graphic sent back to your code as a Base64 encoded PNG or JSON string. Read more about integrating with our API documentation. Let us know what you think We love the potential of the Mozilla Open Badges initiative and want to be a part of what's going on, that's the reason we built the badge designer in the first place. If you've got an idea, an image suggestion, an integration opportunity or anything else you'd like to contribute then you can let us know on our feedback page or by dropping an email to product-manager@myknowledgemap.com.
