A Perilous Hobby: Vertical Camping Next time you’re passing by a cliff and happen to see a precariously hanging tent with campers inside, don’t be alarmed, it’s just a portable ledge (portaledge): Portaledges — or deployable hanging tents — might seem like a thrill-seeking activity (and it can be), but the idea has actually been around since the 1950s. During this time, rock climbers began to stay overnight on the mountains they were scaling and started looking for convenient niches in the mountain side to make their bed. The first portaledges were used in Yosemite National Park and were non-collapsible cots or hammocks. Climbers would sit on a Navy surplus canvas chair and rest their heads on their dangling rucksacks.

Blog If you think your bike looks good, it does. If you like the way your bike rides, it’s an awesome bike. You don’t need to spend a million dollars to have a great bike, but if you do spend a million dollars and know what you want you’ll probably also have a great bike. Yes, you can tour on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can race on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can commute on your bike – whatever it is. 26” wheels or 29” or 650b or 700c or 24” or 20” or whatever – yes, that wheel size is rad and you’ll probably get where you’re going. Disc brakes, cantis, v-brakes, and road calipers all do a great job of stopping a bike when they’re working and adjusted. No paint job makes everyone happy. Yes, you can put a rack on that. Steel is a great material for making bike frames - so is aluminum, carbon fiber, and titanium. You can have your saddle at whatever angle makes you happy. Your handlebars can be lower than your saddle, even with your saddle, or higher than your saddle.

Badass of the Week Fridtjof Nansen If you can look at this picture and tell me that this isn't one of the sweetest photos of a dude with a 'stache that you've ever seen, then you obviously need to learn a little something about facial hair and being awesome. This picture alone makes the guy badass, even if you didn't know the story behind it. You will be pleased to learn, no doubt, that the man behind this vicious strip of solidified testosterone is sufficiently badass to pull off a soup strainer that epically righteous. It can be no other way. Fridtjof Nansen was a tough-as-nails Norwegian psychopath with an impossible-to-spell first name and an unstoppable desire to constantly freeze his balls off and risk his life in the name of science and kickassery. In 1882, the 21 year-old Nansen went on a naval expedition to Greenland and instantly fell in love with the harsh, unyielding hellhole he discovered there. Ah, good times. After the war, Nansen continued being awesome to the world. Links: Fram Museum Main

Sky Garden House I think one of the reasons that many are skeptical about environmental design is because they think its terribly complex and costly. It does take a bit more effort on the front end, but it's definitely not rocket science. This architecture by Guz Architects is a wonderfully developed minimalistic design with a curvilinear flare that really brings out the organic coverings. I'm most impressed with how design facilitates the needs of the plants and shrubs located throughout the house. Submerged landscape discovered under Atlantic Ocean Buried deep beneath the sediment of the North Atlantic Ocean lies an ancient, lost landscape with furrows cut by rivers and peaks that once belonged to mountains. Geologists recently discovered this roughly 56-million-year-old landscape using data gathered for oil companies. "It looks for all the world like a map of a bit of a country onshore," said Nicky White, the senior researcher. "It is like an ancient fossil landscape preserved 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) beneath the seabed." So far, the data have revealed a landscape about 3,861 square miles (10,000 square km) west of the Orkney-Shetland Islands that stretched above sea level by almost as much as 0.6 miles (1 km). History beneath the seafloor The discovery emerged from data collected by a seismic contracting company using an advanced echo-sounding technique. The researchers traced eight major rivers, and core samples, taken from the rock beneath the ocean floor, revealed pollen and coal, evidence of land-dwelling life.

Adjusting Bike Shifter In this Skill Builder piece, guest contributor and mountain biker Chris Nodder (author of Bike Boo Boos) explains common problems with bike shifters and how to deal with them. – Gareth Before you mess with the derailleur, consider other potential sources of your poor shifting problem. If the rear shifter works properly when using the large chain ring but not the small chain ring, or vice versa, then the rear derailleur hanger might be bent.If the shifting skips when you apply pressure, check that your chain and cassette are not worn.If the shifting skips every third or fourth pedal revolution, check for a tight chain link.If the shifting skips when you go over a bump, and you are riding a full suspension bike, check that your cable housing is long enough. It may be stretching as the suspension flexes, causing the gears to ghost shift at that time. Dirty, rusty, kinked, or damaged cables and cable housing will also make shifting a problem. First check the derailleur’s range of motion.

Writable – Table With Writing Surface by Tianyu Xiao Write on a Table The Writable is a fun and interactive look at how we can spark up the conversation around the coffee table. Three flip panels at the centre house chalkboards on the underside with a chalk discreetly held in place. I love the way it changes the outlook of a simple structure to something more eloquent. Definitely a conversation starter! Designer: Tianyu Xiao Guy Hacks Times Square Funny Videos, Free Games, & Funny Pictures Sign up | Login Guy Hacks Times Square [+] Not fake, he's a real asian. 10 More Common Faults in Human Thought Humans This list is a follow up to Top 10 Common Faults in Human Thought. Thanks for everyone’s comments and feedback; you have inspired this second list! It is amazing that with all these biases, people are able to actually have a rational thought every now and then. Trick Cyclist Pedalling superhero Danny MacAskill is the star of a new show that highlights urban street sports. He shot to fame when a film of his jaw-dropping bike antics captured the public imagination. Then the Edinburgh man was able to give up his day job and spend all his time on his extraordinary talent. Now Channel 4 has starred Danny in Concrete Circus when filmmakers followed him around for a summer. Alongside Danny are skateboarder Kilian Martin, free runners Blue and Phil Doyle and BMX flatlander Keelan Phillips. He was filmed by Stu Thomson. "We looked hard for a location that would have a character in the film and make it very different from the others. “We were pretty tight on time making it, as I've had a busy year, but with Stu's filming skills and a great soundtrack I think we've managed to pull off a fun little film... spread it, if you like it!” You can see the original video that shot the Scot to internet stardom.
