A Quick Background on Meta Tags Meta tags in general have been a very controversial topic over the years in the SEO industry, and rightly so. In the early days of SEO, search engine optimizers and many webmasters used the Meta Keywords tag as a platform to stuff as many target keywords into a page as possible – whether they were relevant or not. The problem is that people were abusing the use of this tag and many pages that shouldn’t have been ranking well were taking top positions for keywords they had no business showing up for. And so – like the dinosaurs – the use of Meta Keywords as an effective SEO strategy has died out. It is the Meta Description tag. What is a Meta Description? Today, I'd like to share a few insights gained while resolving an issue originally brought up by a peer. The concern was to include the Vary: Accept-Encoding header -- it's not on every server response, but it should be. When browsers make a request, they include HTTP headers for the server to decide what to send back (Is this a mobile client? That's great for direct access, but modern networks use intermediate caches and CDNs. Vary to the rescue. For example, if a server sends the Vary: User-Agent header, intermediate caches will store a separate cache entry for each User-Agent they see (every OS + browser combination, yikes). Well, the BootstrapCDN issue came up, so I decided to give Vary another look. There had to be a good reason, so I asked SO.
