Not just a letter The sound schwa does not only represent a single letter. In some words it is the sound of several letters or even a whole syllable. This is often, but not only, seen in words which have a syllable made up of a vowel letter followed by the letter 'r'. Remember the schwa sound is only used if the syllable which it is in is not stressed. Listen to these examples, the schwa sounds are marked in red: This present is for my brother. To survive the cold weather you have to make thorough preparations. Download these examples (39k)

Elision Elision Elision is very simply the omission of certain sounds in certain contexts. The most important occurrences of this phenomenon regard: 1) Alveolar consonants /t/ and /d/ when ‘sandwiched’ between two consonants (CONS – t/d – CONS), e.g. This can also take place within affricates /t§/ and /d½/ when preceded by a consonant, e.g. The phoneme /t/ is a fundamental part of the negative particle not, the possibility of it being elided makes the foreign students life more difficult. The Best Websites For Learning English Pronunciation I had to make a lot of difficult choices to come up with this latest “The Best…” list. One decision I made was to focus this list more on Beginning and Early Intermediate English Language Learners, or for more advanced ELL’s who primarily would use these sites more to “brush-up” or review some basic pronunciation skills. I am developing another list that I’ll call The Best Sites For Developing English Conversational Skills. That one will probably be geared more towards Intermediate and Advanced English Language Learners, and will include more of the sites I received from readers in my call for recommendations. Several readers recommended sites using the phonetic alphabet.

Farther / Further: expressing relative distance or Merriam-Webster on word origin. Farther and further are historically the same word, so it is not surprising that the two have long been used more or less interchangeably. Further is the older of the two; it appears to have originated as the comparative form of a Germanic ancestor of English forth. Farther originated in Middle English as a variant of further that was influenced by the comparative (spelled ferre) of far (then spelled fer) which it (and further) eventually replaced. So neither word was originally connected with far, but gradually they have both become so. Fowler believed that most people did not use both terms… and the one that Fowler saw as usual was further.
