German Government May Fine Businesses for Using Google Analytics How much do you rely on web analytics? Probably a great deal, and with good reason. It’s incredibly hard to get ahead online without looking at analytics and using that information to your advantage. That is what appears to be happening in Germany. "Google says it wasn’t aware that discussions with German officials had ended, and that it was actively working to address their concerns," reports Christopher Lawton. A Google spokesperson is quoted as saying, "Google Analytics complies with European data protection laws and is used by other European data protection authorities on their own websites." Google had previously agreed to provide webmasters with a way to anonymize IP addresses and an opt-out option for web browsers, but the option isn’t available for all browsers, and this was not enough for the German authorities. Google has a history of privacy-related hurdles in Germany, much of it stemming from Google Maps Street View.

Sococo grabs $4.2M to build a collaborative online office Sococo, the virtual office startup that launched its service at DEMO Fall 2010, has raised $4.2 million in equity funding from undisclosed investors, according to a filing with the SEC. The company’s first service, called Team Space, allows coworkers to communicate using spatially-aware avatars. Within the space, workers can enter virtual offices and instantly conduct meetings with video, voice and screen shares. Sococo currently has more than 10,000 users in over 58 countries ranging from small software startups to teams within big name companies like Yahoo. A basic project studio with two private offices and one conference room is free. The company plans to use the latest funding to focus on sales and marketing of Team Space, but Van Wie hinted that additional services may be in the works.

SAP Software Sales Reach Record, Beat Oracle’s Growth Outlook ShopSocial Raises $1.2 Million For Its “Commerce As A Social Service” Idea ShopSocial, the latest venture started by BuzzLogic co-founder Todd Parsons, has raised $1.2 million in financing. The company, not be confused with ShopSocially (which also just landed funding), is building a platform that it says converges advertising, commerce and social recommendations. You won’t be able to learn much about its plans by browsing the ShopSocial website, but Parsons briefly demoed the platform, and it definitely has some potential in my opinion. Basically, ShopSocial enables brands and merchants to include buttons within display advertising units or on product pages that enables people to share and recommend products and services with their friends (via email, Facebook or Twitter). In return for sharing, the people who help distribute deals for items receive rewards, which can eventually come in many forms (think Amazon gift cards, direct discounts for whatever the advertisers sells, etc.). Here’s how Parsons puts it:

PHP Platform-as-a-Service Startup Nabs $1.8M in New Funding PHP Fog, a PaaS (platform as a service) startup for PHP developers, has just secured a $1.8 million Series A led by Madrona Venture Group and joined by First Round Capital, Founders Co-op and other prominent angels. The company is still in a closed beta and is accepting applicants for its waiting list. The cloud-based platform helps PHP developers deploy and scale their web apps, a lot like what Heroku does for Ruby apps and developers. "PHP Fog provides simple one-click installations of some of the most popular PHP applications out there... As you'll recall, Heroku was recently acquired by Salesforce for the staggering price of $212 million. Especially when one considers the relatives sizes of the PHP and Ruby communities, an investment in a PHP PaaS in the wake of a Ruby PaaS's acquisition makes perfect sense. But enough about Heroku. "I got a prototype working to prove that it’s possible. PHP Fog gives developers dedicated (as opposed to shared) resources for their apps.

Case Study: How Google Sells Its Free Products Modern commercials are a funny thing. Ad agencies are trying to figure out how to give their commercials viral appeal while balancing that against providing company or product information. The Old Spice guy campaign is more or less universally lauded as an example of how to reboot a company's image and turn a commercial idea into a viral phenomenon. However, the videos, and the campaign's subsequent expansion onto Twitter, focused on entertainment and branding: We knew what kind of brand Old Spice wanted to be and we laughed at (most of) Isaiah Mustafa's quips and sound bites. Old Spice prioritized those elements instead of explaining how its products work or even what they smell like. That worked for Old Spice, because most people can intuit how deodorant works; the company wasn't reinventing the wheel, it was reinventing its brand. Google's products are often less obvious to an everyday audience. Make Your Audience Feel Smart Make Your Audience Care Offer Value in More Creative Ways
