Runes
the origins of Runes The middle-eastern biblical description of the phonic alphabet's (Phoenecian root) division into the many spoken language-branches of the Semitic middle-eastern language family-tree describes it as having originally occured shortly after the world-flood that destroyed Atlantis (called, in Genesis, the city of Enoch), at the beginning of the Babylonian Empire from the unification of northern Akkad and southern Sumer between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. In Genesis we are told of the building of the Tower of Babel, and of the subsequent "confusion of the tongues." This mythology establishes the division of the alphabet into languages to the east of Babylon, with the 50 letters of Indus Sanskrit, and to the west with the 27 "monoliteral" Hieroglyphics of Egypt as having derived from the 36 letters of pre-Babylonian "Ugaritic" cuneiform, the earliest known ante-deluvial alphabets known of including "linear-A" and "-B." the 18 Armanic Runes of Guido von List -ben

Rune Meanings - The Elder Futhark I work with the "Elder Futhark", the runic alphabet which is a composite of the runic symbols most commonly used in northern Europe. The names of the runes of the Elder Futhark are speculative recreations of what linguists call "proto-Germanic", which stems from "proto-Indo-European". There are many versions of the runic alphabets. The runes are broken into three sections or groups of eight, called aett (aettir, plural). First the rune name is given, then its phonetic value, its symbolic image, and finally the esoteric meaning used in divination. Fehu(F: Domestic cattle, wealth.) Uruz: (U: Auroch, a wild ox.) Thurisaz: (TH: Thorn or a Giant.) Ansuz: (A: The As, ancestral god, i.e. Raidho: (R: Wagon or chariot.) Kenaz: (K: Beacon or torch.) Gebo: (G: Gift.) Wunjo: (W or V: Joy.) Hagalaz: (H: Hail.) Nauthiz: (N: Need.) Isa: (I: Ice.) Jera: (J or Y: A year, a good harvest.) Eihwaz: (EI: Yew tree.) Perthro: (P: Lot cup, vagina.) Algiz: (Z or -R: Elk, protection.) Sowilo: (S: The sun.)

Rune Casting | What is Rune Casting? “Rune Casting”, is often seen by many people as something very similar to “fortune telling”. This is quite far from the truth however. Rune Casting works more deeply with the subconscious and is more like a guidance of the present not the future. As one asks a question, their entire conscious and unconscious mind is focused towards that one question and are drawn to a particular rune. When performing a runic reading, you often only address one particular issue, which you than examine the past, the present and the “future”, or rather “what will be if one follows the path one appears to be on”. Runes are on no level magical or demonic, they are a method for examining the path you are on and what the effects might be all through using your subconscious. How to Perform Rune Casting? There is not one particular method on how to perform rune casting, however most people find that finding a quiet place where you know you will not be disturbed the easiest way. Instructions

Making Runes - Andy's Bucket-o-Memes Systems. Every magical tradition has them. The Qabalists have the Tree of Life, Voudou hungans have the hierarchy of loa, Western occultists have the Tarot. I've long held that the systems are all as good as one another; some work better for one person than another, but none is intrinsically better or more accurate than any other. To date, I have used both the Tree of Life and the Tarot, but recently I was bugged by the complexity of both of these systems. A word on divination is probably not out of place. My set of runes were to be used primarily for divination, so I wanted something robust and lasting. What sort of stone? "Why?" I beg to differ. Which rune script to use? Now, I'm fussy. Why these? The next decision was regarding the blank rune, Wyrd. In order to make these runes, I needed some way of carving the stone and some way of marking the grooves to make them more visible. There were several options for carving. How about pigments? There you have it.

Norse Runes — Scandinavian Viking Runes — Norse Rune Alphabets The eldest runestones, inscribed with Norse runes, date from the 4th century. These were the Elder Futhark runes. However, the most of the runestones were created during the late Viking Age and thus inscribed with the Younger Futhark runes. The runestones with Norse runes were usually erected to commemorate one or several deceased kinsmen, and in most cases these people died at home peacefully. Usually, men raised or commanded raising a runestone, while some of them are raised by women, usually widows of the deceased. It is believed that runestones were brightly colored. Uthark theory In the occult study of the esoteric meaning of runes, the Uthark theory originated in the 1930s with the work of philologist Sigurd Agrell (1881–1937), a professor at Lund University, Sweden. He theorised that the rune row is a cipher, and that one can understand its meaning by placing the first rune, "F", last, resulting in an ”Uthark” instead of the traditional "Futhark" order.[1] He articulated the bulk of his theory in his book of 1932, Die spätantike Alphabet-Mystik und die Runenreihe [The Alphabet-mysticism of late antiquity and the sequence of the runes]. The suggestion has not been accepted in mainstream runic studies, due to lack of historical sources, but has found proponents in occult circles and in popular culture.

Runes 2 What images do the runes conjure for you when you work with them or think about them? The bearded Viking with a horned helmet, a gleaming axe and a bag of runes bouncing on his muscular thighs! Or do you lean more towards the wart-faced wise woman, raven on her shoulder, bent over the fire, inhaling foul-smelling smoke and uttering obscure poetic prophecies. Casting the Runes They were not taken from a bag and laid out in a pattern. A Magical Act To cast the runes was a magical act that helped to create the future. The Origin of the Runes The Vikings did not originate the runes. The Mystical Tradition The Elder Futhark is a system of sacred symbols that links language to a secret mystical tradition. Dialogue of Living Sound Though the runes form an alphabetic sequence, they are essentially ideographic rather than alphabetical.

The 13 Witches Runes ~ Part I One of my all-time favourite oracles is the Witches Runes. Differently from the Nordic Futhark runes, they are not an alphabet in the most literal sense of the word, but rather a gathering of symbols that are a part of the western "collective mind". Love, man, woman, moon, sun, death... all these are present in the Witches Runes. Although apparently simple, these symbols can be used for fortune-telling with incredible accuracy, and some people also use them in magical rituals. Sadly, there's very little information about this oracle on the web, so I have decided to talk a bit about the 13 symbols here in the blog. I use the method taught by Susan Sheppard in her book A Witch's Runes. It's important to keep in mind is that there is more than one kind of "Witches Runes". I'll split the explanation of all 13 runes in 3 or 4 posts, so I can write more detailed definitions for each of them. I hope you all enjoy it! Sun The Sun is well-known symbol of good omen and protection. Moon Flight Rings

Wicca & Witchcraft - Witch's Runes Most Witches are aware that runes can be used for divination. Most practitioners have seen or used the well known Futhark (or Viking) runes, but did you know that there is actually a set of eight pictgraphic runes solely for use by Witches? The Witch's runes consist of eight pictographic stones: The Sun, moon, crossed spears, black rune, wave, ear of corn, rings and the birds. Many Witches use both the Witch's runes and the Futhark runes when divination is called for. A rune is only relevant to a reading if it falls face up, ignore any that are face down. Although fewer in number than the more widely known Futhark runes, many people find the Witch's runes much easier to use as they are somewhat simpler to interpret.

Runic magic In medieval sources, notably the Poetic Edda, the Sigrdrífumál mentions "victory runes" to be carved on a sword, "some on the grasp and some on the inlay, and name Tyr twice." In early modern and modern times, related folklore and superstition is recorded in the form of the Icelandic magical staves. In the early 20th century, Germanic mysticism coins new forms of "runic magic", some of which were continued or developed further by contemporary adherents of Germanic Neopaganism. Modern systems of runic divination are based on Hermeticism, classical Occultism, and the I Ching. Historical evidence[edit] Tacitus[edit] They attach the highest importance to the taking of auspices and casting lots. It is often debated whether "signs" refers specifically to runes or to other marks; both interpretations are plausible and Tacitus does not give enough detail for a definite decision to be made.[2] Epigraphy[edit] Medieval sources[edit] "Grass cures the scab / and runes the sword-cut" (137) Ralph Blum[edit]

The Runic Journey Runes are an alphabetic script used by the peoples of Northern Europe from the first century c.e. until well into the Middle Ages. In addition to their use as a written alphabet, the runes also served as a system of symbols used for magic and divination. Runes fell into disuse as the Roman alphabets became the preferred script of most of Europe, but their forms and meanings were preserved in inscriptions and manuscripts. The primary characteristic which distinguishes a runic alphabet from other alphabets is that each letter, or rune, has a meaning. Today, runes have been rediscovered as a symbolic system and have gained immense popularity as a means of divination. Runes and magick Runes in Magick Like most other divinatory methods, runes can be used in your magickal work, but also as with most other divinatory methods, it takes a lot of practice. The simplest way to use runes in your magick is to add them in as you would a correspondence such as color or planetary hours or herbs. Let's say you're making a happiness herbal bag for yourself; it's easy to simply draw the rune Wunjo on a slip of paper and add it to the herbal bag. One of my favorite runes to use in protection magick is Thurisaz. Runescripts Instead of using a rune as just another correspondence in a given spell, runescripts are the spell. Now, this isn't as easy as it sounds-remember what I wrote in the first paragraph of this section: using runes in magick takes a lot of practice. So, let's look at a sample script to get an idea of what I'm talking about. The first two runes are Kenaz and Isa. It's best to use an odd number of runes in your runescript-three, five, seven.
