Selon MarketsAndMarkets, le marché des applications de réalité augmentée était estimé à 181,25 millions de dollars en 2011 et atteindra 5,15 milliards de dollars en 2016. Les principaux acteurs du marché sont la France, l’Allemagne, l’Autriche, les États-Unis et les Pays-Bas. Pourtant, la réalité augmentée (car tel est le nom du concept) n’est pas une technologie des plus nouvelles. Pour mieux tenter d'imaginer son avenir, attardons nous un moment sur le passé et le présent d'une technologie qui transcende les écrans… La réalité augmentée a vu le jour il y a 30 ans, dans les visières des pilotes de chasse qui pouvaient ainsi prendre connaissance de données informatiques s’affichant devant leurs yeux, au cours du vol. Mais comment s’effectue la fusion entre notre univers, bien tangible, et ces éléments de simulation générés par les ordinateurs ? Un écran, une caméra et un logiciel sont nécessaires pour que la magie opère. Par le biais de la caméra, le logiciel est capable de reconnaître une partie du monde réel, qu’il s’agisse d’un motif imprimé (comme c’est le cas pour la feuille de papier de la vidéo) ou d’un paysage, urbain comme rural.
