Activist Media One of the difficulties faced by social movements is getting their message reported clearly, accurately and effectively through the lens of mainstream media. A key factor in this work has been the creation of alternative media that both offer a direct channel to fairer representation and can keep the mainstream media honest by critiquing their coverage. In the contemporary, media-saturated world new problems emerge in the form of "protest fatigue" -- mainstream failure to cover demonstrations often dismissed as "sixties style protests," as if protest can be confined to one decade or is a stylistic choice -- and the silo effect in which people only get the news that reinforces their ideology. The sites and resources below are working to address these issues with courage and imagination. Featured Site Independent Media Center. Key Sites AdBusters.

Dennis Trainor, Jr (scroll down for contact info) | Transcript:Bill Maher should be praised for how efficiently he elucidated exactly what the Israel propaganda machine, with full support and cooperation of the United States government, would have us believe when he took to twitter and remarked: “Dealing w/ Hamas is like dealing w/ a crazy woman who's trying to kill u - u can only hold her wrists so long before you have to slap her.” In the same spirit of violating the rules of proportionality Israel violates in waging an asymmetrical war on Palestinians, I’ll counter Bill Maher’s tweet with an open letter. Dearest Bill: Like most men who find themselves in the admittedly unenviable position of having a woman trying to kill you I’ll wager that the amount of time you have spent searching your soul for her homicidal motive was not nearly as long as the time you spent cuddling her after you date raped her. Now, I know what you are thinking Bill – rape is a serious accusation. Could that be possible?

We Speak For Earth The City of Dallas gave $1.1 million to Ronald Jones on Wednesday for his claims that he was beaten and falsely arrested by Dallas police — and then spent 15 months in jail as a result. On December 18, 2009, Dallas police got a call of two white men fighting in downtown Dallas. But then Dallas police Officer Matthew Antkowiak saw Jones — who is African-American — crossing Reunion Boulevard."Mr. Jones is walking down the street. Doesn’t fit the description at all," said his attorney, Don Tittle. The officer claimed Jones was throwing beer cans, so he pulled him over to arrest him." Police brutality, institutionalized racism, falsified reports, trumped up charges, man spends over a year in the system, officers “cleared” of wrong-doing, and taxpayers on the hook for the settlement.

The Peoples Voice Elena Panina (Елена Панина) | Fred Rogers' song about boys and girls, written in the "herbalist" year of 1967, went viral on English-language Twitter. Not even 60 years later, it suddenly hurt the feelings of the LGBT community. Rogers was an American TV host and puppeteer-something like our Valentina Leontieva from "Visiting a Fairy Tale." And his song Everybody's Fancy is analogous to our "What are our boys made of," with lines as simple as these: Boys are boys from birth. These phrases have been the subject of scandal. "Because sometimes kids think they might as well take it and change somehow. At the time, this elicited a friendly laugh from the audience and a raised eyebrow from the host. Only girls can be moms. Became: Girls grow up and become moms. Still, something fatally wrong happened to the whole world between 1980 and 1992.

Alternative media Because the term "alternative" has connotations of self-marginalization, some media outlets now prefer the term "independent" over "alternative". Several different categories of media may fall under the heading of alternative media. These include, but are not limited to, radical media, dissident and social movement media, ethnic/racial media, indigenous media, community media, subcultural media, student media, and avant-garde media. Definition[edit] The traditional, binary definition of alternative media as stated above has been expanded in the last decade. Michael Albert has written that primarily, organizations self-identify as alternative. With the increasing importance attributed to digital technologies, questions have arisen about where digital media fit in the dichotomy between alternative and mainstream media. Digital technologies have also led to an alternative form of video more commonly known as citizen generated journalism. History[edit] Theory[edit] Propaganda model[edit]

ZERO ANTHROPOLOGY Obstacles to the Good Society by Alton C. Thompson / April 18th, 2011 My focus here is on the obstacles—claimed and actual—that stand in the way of achieving the Good Society. Before proceeding, however, I must offer some sort of definition of the Good Society, and do so by borrowing from a 1999 movie, Blast From the Past: The Good Society consists of gentlemen—or, in the case of females, gentlemen-like individuals. The relevant speech in the movie is this one, spoken by Troy (played by Dave Foley): You know, I asked him about that. (The “him” here is Adam, played by Brendan Fraser.) A gentleman, by this definition, is one who has empathy for the others with whom he has contact, is distressed if those others are in pain or in need, and will do what he can to address existing needs. To accept the “fact” that our society is not now a Good Society, and the value judgment that it should be, is not necessarily to believe that it will—or even can—be. My goals here are threefold: A. 1. 2. What was Darwin “saying” here? 3. 4.
