Emphasis Mine Every morning I see her. She is as consistent as Al Roker’s silly jokes and my son’s breakfast choice (always oatmeal). When I moved into my neighborhood in Orange two and a half years ago she was the first person I met. Her name is Gertrude* and she is in her nineties. In search of the perfect wine Can genetic engineering make wine even better? Holding a glass of wine by its stem, careful not to warm the liquid with body heat, you raise it to the light above your head. The bright, clear liquid is the shade of pale straw, informing you of its youth and pure character. You bring your nose to the rim of the glass and lower it in, inhaling deeply. Its aroma is inviting and fresh, full of fruit with strong notes of apple and citrus.

Sisal Rope Bowl I once fell in love with a rope bowl, it was by David Stark for West Elm. Sadly that awesome rope bowl is no longer available, bring it back, bring it back I say! My latest crafty project was inspired by that bowl and I believe has something to do with my fixation on neutrals with layers of texture. In fact, I think I need an entire Pinterest category devoted to it. My Pocket Music is love in search of a word. Sidney Lanier Music and fire is all I wanted to write about today, or well, it wasn't so much a choice. These photos wanted to come out and they are not my usual motif. Fried Pickles + Spicy Dill Pickle Mayo Here's a weird connection for you: fried pickles + love. As I was making these fried pickles the other day I was thinking about the very first time I ate fried pickles. This is often my train of thought when I'm working on something. And I realized that the very first time I had fried pickles was at a bar with Trey. This was before we liked each other.

The Art of Doing Stuff - StumbleUpon The time has come for the final Dollar store post. *sniff* It’s one of those occasions that’s both sad and happy. Like watching a child go off to school for the first time, or eating a whole strawberry-rhubarb pie in one sitting. Mostly though, this is an exciting moment. The final Dollar store post is perhaps the most dramatic transformation ever to be recorded in history. Ever.

pia jane bijkerk The humid air and persistent drizzle last Saturday (actually the Saturday before last… it’s taken me quite some time to compose this post) did not deter us from having an intimate garden party to celebrate Laly’s second birthday. I have not hosted a party since we lived on the houseboat in Amsterdam, so I was feeling a bit daunted about the idea and wondered if I could do it without getting completely overwhelmed and stressed (the main reason why I don’t host parties – dinner ones or otherwise). I worked hard for the two weeks leading up to the event to be really present with my time and to let things go if they weren’t working out the way I intended, or if things happened that stopped me from being able to create exactly what I had envisioned. My intention was to try my best to have fun with each part of the process – painting the bunting, gathering the flora, cooking, setting up… I still got stressed, and we still had a family meltdown the day of the party. BUT. Stunner.

Arnold Palmer Mix Up Arnold Palmers are my favorite summer drink! These sweet treats are half ice tea and half lemonade. They are named after a famous golfer. Some people also call these half and halfs. Our Clean Up Crew! Welcome back another Made by Me Monday! Remember when I made THIS? Caught in the Middle The Middle East, that is. 3 weeks ago, this past Sunday, my husband Giuseppe and I moved to Dubai, UAE. This amazing opportunity errupted and we jumped in...both feet, no looking back...and here we sit, in the Middle East! Who would've thought that 3 months ago, at our wedding, on 7/7/07, that this was in the stars for us!

Playful Cooking I was reading Judith Jones’s “My Life In Food” and she mentioned that her mother banned garlic from the kitchen because it covered the natural smell of the food. Instantly, it got me thinking about my mom’s cooking style and how she uses garlic only when she is preparing meat. As for me, it’s almost like a routine I follow while preparing any savory dish – first smash couple of garlic cloves and then comes the rest of the flavor profile. I didn’t grow up eating ton load of garlic but then, how did I fell in love with garlic? I really don’t have any answer to that.
