How I Finally Figured Out Collaborative Writing By Amber Rain Chandler I want to share some of what I’ve learned this year about having students work collaboratively on writing assignments (and how I graded them). But first I need to say this: When it comes to how we approach students’ learning, I’d like to suggest that the world of school is absolutely archaic compared to the “real world” of our students. It all fell into place for me when my son and husband were playing Super Mario Brothers on the Wii. As someone who came of age in the 80’s, my husband was reliving his childhood. To us, that is just how games work, but he wanted to know: Why go all the way back to the beginning and re-do the part you already know? This small moment has given me insight into this generation’s learning process in a way that nothing else has. Today’s students need to know how to find and obtain answers that keep them moving forward because they live in a world where information is not the currency, but the ability to use information is. Guess what.

Contre l’anglicisation de la didactique du français La semaine dernière, alors que je me trouve dans la salle des enseignants, la secrétaire de mon école vient porter une boîte sur la table commune. J’y jette un coup d’oeil et j’en conclus que cet envoi s’adresse au professeur d’anglais puisqu’il s’agit de guides d’enseignement écrit en cette langue. Quelques minutes plus tard, l’enseignante de première année entre dans la salle et m’apprend qu’il ne s’agit pas d’un matériel destiné à l’enseignement de l’anglais, mais plutôt d’une nouvelle méthode d’enseignement de l’écriture pour le cours de français. En apprenant cela, je suis un peu troublé. J’exprime ma surprise en posant à ma collègue la question suivante : « Vous n’allez tout de même pas enseigner le français de la 1re à la 6e année en vous basant sur une méthode écrite en anglais et même pas traduite en français pour ce qui est de son application pratique dans les classes ? Je suis ébahi ! Presque 50 ans plus tard, nous nous retrouvons devant le même problème.
