Floating Cities Could Be on the Horizon This weekend, seasteading enthusiasts will be flocking to the city for their annual conference at the Le Meridien Hotel to plan future floating cities. The ultimate goal of the seasteading movement is to establish autonomously governed communities on the water -- an ocean city-state, so to speak. The conference is hosted by the Seasteading Institute, and this year participants will discuss ways to implement sustainable energy options and recruiting real estate investors. "We are not the first to see freedom on the high seas," writes Randolph Hencken, the Institute's senior director, "but we are the first to temper this idealistic vision with a realistic strategy." The 2012 Seasteading conference is expected to attract entrepreneurs and investors interested in starting businesses, engineers, and maritime professionals who can tackle the logistics and technology required to make this dream a reality, and ocean-law experts to weigh in on policy issues.

Does Optimal Size of Government Research Refute Anarchism: A First Look In this post, I plan to make some preliminary comments on the whole idea that there is such a thing as an “Optimal Size of Government.” I certainly cannot address all the issues in one blog; hence, I plan to address this “Optimal Size of Government” issue a few more times in the future. For this post, I plan to do a critique of a few “startling” comments made in an article published by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, an independent Canadian public policy think tank. The particular article that I will comment on is called Russians Understand Optimal Size of Government, and this article is available by clicking on the following link: Russians Understand Optimal Size of Government. In particular, I want to focus on the Frontier Centre’s assertion that “Optimal Size of Government” statistical research can somehow “refute” anarchism. But before I jump into a discussion of anarchy and “Optimal Size of Government” research, I want to make a few comments on this article in general.

American Medicalcare: It's Terminal - The Dollar Vigilante Blog - [Editor's note: the following post is by Jim Karger, TDV Legal Correspondent] The final nail has been driven into the coffin of America's medical care system (note it's not healthcare because the system has nothing to do with health). With the Supreme Court decision last week on ObamaCare, the US has taken its failed venture into socialized medicine, i.e., Medicare, and foisted it upon the general public, most of whom really believe they are going to get something for nothing. It is as if the US government doesn't understand that doubling down on a losing bet doesn't make it a winner. And let's not forget that Medicare, which came to America as part of Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society," has been a tragic, unmitigated failure. US medicalcare is the most expensive care in the world.

Competing For State Contracts Is Not Competition Submitted by John Aziz of Azizonomics Competing For State Contracts Is Not Competition Here in Britain, we hear the word competition a lot. Since Margaret Thatcher, there has been a general trend — in the name of competition — toward the selling-off of utilities such as water, railway, electricity and telecoms providers.

How We Come to Own Ourselves - Stephan Kinsella The primary social evil of our time is lack of respect for self-ownership rights. It is what underlies both private crime and institutionalized crime perpetrated by the state. State laws, regulations, and actions are objectionable just because the state is claiming the right to control how someone's body is to be used.
