The Color Strata – Color Names, Common And Less So, Compared I’m an incorrigible data hound. So, once the tempting aroma of XKCD’s color name survey results tickled my nose, I had no choice – but to run to the dining room, stand up on my hind legs, and yank that statistical top sirloin off the table. Om nom nom yum yum yum! For those unfamiliar, XKCD is the popular webcomic, and on its sister blog, author Randall Munroe announced his survey as follows:

Charting The Life And Death Of Our Greatest Companies I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it forever: A great data visualization has the power to illuminate the world in ways that would otherwise be impossible. Today’s example comes from the inestimable Ben Fry and his firm, Fathom, who created a simple but astonishing chart of the performance of the Fortune 500 ever since 1955. By simply flipping our expectations of the data, and presenting it in a surpassingly elegant form, the interactive chart manages to suggest a half-century of grand narratives that have wracked American business. The chart is simply a plotting of the financial performance of each company in the Fortune 500. But clicking on it brings up a through-line, showing how a single company performed over time: Thus, amidst all the wash of data, you can pick out individual stories, and you can choose to view them through the lens of ranking, revenues, and profits.

US Online Ad Spend to Close in on $40 Billion US online advertising spending, which grew 23% to $32.03 billion in 2011, is expected to grow an additional 23.3% to $39.5 billion this year—pushing it ahead of total spending on print newspapers and magazines, according to new forecast by eMarketer. Print advertising spending is expected to fall to $33.8 billion in 2012 from $36 billion in 2011. eMarketer’s previous US online advertising forecast from July 2011 was among the more bullish estimates issued during the year, yet consistently stronger-than-expected results from major industry players and the IAB/PwC through the first three quarters of 2011 contributed to the upward revision. “Advertisers’ comfort level with integrated marketing is greater than ever, and this is helping more advertisers—and more large brands—put a greater share of dollars online,” said David Hallerman, eMarketer principal analyst.
