And it’s true that years of wear and tear take a toll. But how we live matters more than how many birthdays we’ve had. “Aging is just a lifetime of inactivity and poor nutrition,’’ says Nancy Clark, a registered dietitian and author of Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook (Human Kinetics). Imagine your joints as gears on a bicycle. So what are the right foods to keep you cruising along? Click the arrow below for your 8 best bets. In the short-term, inflammation isn’t bad. Your weapon? If you’re not a fan of these nuts, munch on sunflower seeds or peanuts.

How graphene and friends could harness the Sun’s energy 03 May 2013 Combining wonder material graphene with other stunning one-atom thick materials could create the next generation of solar cells and optoelectronic devices, scientists have revealed. University of Manchester and National University of Singapore researchers have shown how building multi-layered heterostructures in a three-dimensional stack can produce an exciting physical phenomenon exploring new electronic devices. The breakthrough, published in Science, could lead to electric energy that runs entire buildings generated by sunlight absorbed by its exposed walls; the energy can be used at will to change the transparency and reflectivity of fixtures and windows depending on environmental conditions, such as temperature and brightness. The isolation of graphene, by University of Manchester Nobel Laureates Professor Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov in 2004, led to the discovery of the whole new family of one-atom-thick materials. Whether you are growing, aging or regularly active, it is essential to maintain your bone and joint health in order to stay fit and prevent the onset of degenerative conditions such as osteoporosis. Eating foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C and selenium will help keep your bones and joints healthy. Calcium is important because of its role in building and maintaining strong bones, thereby promoting healthy joint function, and milk is one of the best sources of calcium available. Yogurt, like milk, is rich in calcium, and certain brands contain essential vitamin D to promote absorption. Leafy green vegetables, such as collard greens, spinach and kale, tend to be moderately high in calcium and high in vitamin C and selenium. Breakfast cereals are often fortified with vitamins and minerals to make them more nutritious.

A video game that teaches how to program in Java One of the characters in the CodeSpells game environment (credit: UC San Diego) CodeSpells, an immersive, first-person player video game designed to teach students in elementary to high school how to program in the popular Java language, has been developed by University of California, San Diego computer scientists. The researchers tested the game on a group of 40 girls, ages 10 to 12, who had never been exposed to programming before. In just one hour of play, the girls had mastered some of Java’s basic components and were able to use the language to create new ways of playing with the game. “CodeSpells is the only video game that completely immerses programming into the game play,” said William Griswold, a computer scientist at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego. The UC San Diego computer scientists plan to release the game for free and make it available to any educational institution that requests it. How CodeSpells works Computer science learning theory

TidGen® Power System by Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) ORPC’s TidGen® Power System is designed to generate emission-free electricity at tidal and deep river sites. The four-turbine TidGen® TGU is secured to the ocean floor using either a fixed bottom support frame (BSF) or a buoyant tensioned mooring system (BTMS), which incorporates a pod, or wing, above the TGU that provides buoyancy and is secured to the sea floor using an innovative tensioned mooring system. The BTMS allows the TidGen® TGU to be deployed in water depths of up to hundreds of feet. Whether to use a BSF or BTMS is determined by actual site conditions. A complete TidGen® Power System usually consists of an array of several TidGen® devices with the output from each device connected to an underwater power consolidation module, which is connected to an on-shore station using a single underwater power cable.

Foods for Joint Health The joints of your hands, hips, knees, shoulders, elbows and back are used in everyday movement and degenerative disease can produce pain in these areas. When the cartilage in joints begins to break down, you may experience symptoms of pain and tenderness of the affected joint as well as difficulty with stiffness and decreased mobility. While the cartilage in joints breaks down over time, certain foods may improve joint health. Water is needed for every body function and constitutes more than 60 percent of an adult body, according to the University of Michigan Integrative Medicine. Adequate water intake helps to cushion and lubricate the joint space. INTP Relationships, Love & Mating By Dr. A.J. Drenth While sometimes presenting as aloof or self-focused, INTPs often attract potential mates through their Extraverted Intuition (Ne) and Extraverted Feeling (Fe). These functions contribute to their wittiness, personability, and sincerity, conferring a childlike innocence that others find refreshing. INTPs are often kind and considerate, wanting everyone to feel included and treated with respect (Fe). Should INTPs Even Bother with Relationships? Because of their Fe inferior, INTPs can enjoy being around people. The fact that INTPs can enjoy working independently for long periods of time may also discourage them from complicating their lives with relationships. In many cases, INTPs’ fears are justified. INTP Compatibility: Choosing a Partner Since INTPs may lack intentionality when it comes to maintaining intimate friendships, their romantic partner often serves as their closest friend, confidant, and source of support.
