It's early in the evening and some old school friends just called unexpectedly. They'll be at your house in 90 minutes and you want to make a quick meal with what you have in the house. Where do you find an easy to make recipe using the ingredients you've got to hand (chicken pieces, onions, potatoes, cream, wine, and seasonings)? You open your browser, go to Google, and search for a recipe with these ingredients and you're given nearly 600,000 pages. There must be a better way to search just the sites that you'd normally use for recipes and return a smaller set of results that are more likely to help you get a meal on the table. What Is a Custom Search Engine? A custom search engine (CSE) tells Google which sites to search and which to avoid when dealing with a search query. You can tune this list of sites over time, adding and removing sites from the list. Here's an example of a custom search engine for Bermuda.

TagCloud - Home Extreme Science current work Running the Numbers looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 32,000 breast augmentation surgeries in the U.S. every month. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. ~cj, Seattle, 2008
