Multi-Year iPad Deployment At UC Irvine Med School: The Results Are In A tremendously interesting and probably important experiment has been taking place at the University of California, Irvine since 2010. Since then, the university has been using tablet PCs to improve student learning and the program is showing signs of successful. Specifically, students enrolled in the college’s med school that are part of the program that is using the mobile devices are getting better results than their university peers, they are developing apps for the technology and they are even working to improve healthcare overall. Named the “ iMedEd Initiative ,” all of the students enrolled in the college’s med school receive tablets with their textbooks and educational materials loaded on them. Many Promising Outcomes The university reports that students participating in the program scored on average 23 percent higher on their exams than previous UC Irvine medical school classes. iPad in the Classroom – Can we make it simpler? With many educational institutions choosing to use tablets for learning, it can be quite intimidating for teachers when faced with so many applications. iPad and Education – No Longer A Debate! There is no longer a debate! If money was no object would a teacher want their students to have an iPad each? Even if they only used it to research a different perspective. Even if they only used it to add resources to their work. Even if they only used it as an alternative way to demonstrate learning. The research exists to support the device as a tool for learning. Any mobile device can assist in the learning process, it just happens that the iPad is the current class leader. So why do we continue to debate? Money – It isn’t the educators job to worry about the finances. iGeneric: how can teachers incorporate iPad in all subject areas? A group of science teachers were sitting around on the staff room table. They were having a faculty meeting. One of them said, “I found this great app about biological cells! We can use this to teach the unit about cells!”. Another one responded by saying “This app I stumbled upon yesterday is amazing for teaching about the periodic table!”. What I observed was a number of teachers who flicked through the chapters of the textbook, and then tried to find an iPad app to replace each chapter. In Andrew Douch’s words, the iPad is a “Swiss-army knife” of tools!
