10 Benefits of Rising Early, and How to Do It “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” – Ben Franklin, famously “Put no trust in the benefits to accrue from early rising, as set forth by the infatuated Franklin …” – Mark Twain By Leo Babauta Recently, reader Rob asked me about my habit of waking at 4:30 a.m. each day, and asked me to write about the health benefits of rising early, which I thought was an excellent question. However, there are a ton of other great benefits. Now, let me first say that if you are a night owl, and that works for you, I think that’s great. Greet the day. How to Become an Early Riser Don’t make drastic changes.

What are the F1 through F12 keys? Commonly known as function keys on a computer keyboard, F1 through F12 may have a variety of different uses or no use at all. The operating system installed on the computer and the software program currently open can change how each of these keys operate. A program is capable of not only using each of the function keys, but also combining the function keys with the ALT or CTRL key. For example, Microsoft Windows users can press ALT + F4 to close the program currently active. Note: Some keyboards include additional functions on the function keys, which can be activated by pressing the FN key, usually located near the CTRL key, and the appropriate function key. Tip: Some computers may automatically enable the FN key for accessing the special functions on the F1 through F12 keys. If your keyboard does not have a row of function keys, they are probably set up as secondary functions on other keys. What does "America" mean please? Definition/Meaning It is an irony of history that the name "America" did not come from Christopher Columbus. That distinction belongs to a German writer of geography. In a further twist of events, America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, a 15th century Florentine merchant who owned a business in Seville, Spain, furnishing supplies for ships, preparing them for mercantile expeditions. How do we explain what seems to mock the reality of history? Stirred by the achievements of Columbus and envious of the reputation his discoveries brought, Vespucci endeavored to cultivate Columbus' friendship and trust. Seven years after Columbus' first voyage and while Columbus was still alive, Vespucci accompanied an expedition that consisted of four ships. Some years later Vespucci's letters were published and read by Martin Waldseemuller, a noted geographer, and Mathias Ringmann, a schoolmaster. Apparently ignorant of the discoveries and achievements made by Columbus fifteen years earlier, Ringmann continued:

13 Hacks to Improve Your Google Search Even the king of all search engines can be throttled up with a few simple tricks. From finding flights to discovering new music, here are 13 ways to hack Google. Ever since the Internet's dozens of Web crawlers (AltaVista, anyone?) were whittled down to a single alpha engine, pinpointing your online destination has been a relative breeze. But it turns out even Google can be juiced up with a few simple tricks. Type in “set timer for” followed by a number of minutes, or a specific hour you’d like an alert, and Google will graciously comply with an obnoxious beeping once the moment has arrived. Sometimes a memory lapse leaves you searching for the right word. To encompass a wider definition than you’re currently searching for, add a “~” in front of the word, and Google will pull up results from similar terms as well. Instead of slogging through your airline’s website, just type in your flight number and get an easy look at all the important stuff: flight status, times, terminal, and gate.

DIY Dry Shampoo for Light or Dark Hair Dry shampoos have been all the rage among some of my friends lately, and I can understand why… A product that makes your hair look clean when it hasn’t been washed in the past three days that day is a tremendous help, especially for those of us with little ones who are lucky if we get to use the bathroom alone, much less shower every day… Dry shampoos are also great if you’re switching to “no-poo” or homemade natural shampoo , which will often leave your hair oily for the first week or so while your scalp adjusts to not having its natural oils stripped each day. Personally, I have naturally oily hair even when I don’t strip the oils, so I am a huge fan of dry shampoo. The basic idea of a dry shampoo (or wet-dry shampoo) is to put an oil absorbing substance (like arrowroot or cornstarch) on the oily parts of your hair to absorb the oil and leave it looking clean. Commercial dry shampoos can be pricey and contain things like “isobutane, butane and propane.” DIY Dry Shampoo for Light Hair

How To Drive Down Steep Hills... Without Using Your Brakes! | Fun Times Guide to Travel Tips Tips for saving your brakes when driving down steep grades, including how to use “engine braking” instead of pressing the brake pedal to slow your vehicle down. We just returned from a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee — home to the Great Smoky Mountains. Many of the roads between tourist traps (I mean “sightseeing destinations”) are incredibly steep and winding. Needless to say, with the amount of traffic over the 4th of July holiday, and the sheer number of mountains which exist in the Smokies, we had several occasions to test our downhill driving skills (and our brakes!) There must’ve been about a million cars all traveling single file down those narrow mountain roads — all attempting to spot the biggest black bear in the Smokies (well, more on that later). “It’s An Automatic… I Don’t NEED To Downshift, Right?” Wrong. There are times — even in a vehicle with automatic transmission — that you SHOULD manually downshift. Sure, I’d seen it done before. On The Downhill Here’s how to do it…
