Project California - World's Lightest Road Bikes In 2008 Cervélo began an ambitious engineering project in California to push the composites R&D envelope. This facility is where we prove our leadership in innovating faster, stiffer, lighter and stronger bikes. This is where our engineering leadership is elevated, where we create new manufacturing techniques and improved design processes, including new bicycle-specific layup and ply analysis software. Our final step is strength and safety tests at least 20% higher than industry standards, executed for maximum security and quality. As an engineering company that is dedicated to making all of our riders go faster, we know that we get the greatest benefit when we bring technology inside the company. In 2010 Cervélo launched the R5ca: 100 grams lighter than the nearest competitor, and 30% stiffer (Tour magazine, Nov. 2011). This frame had it all. So we pushed it further. BikeHacks Reader Matteo recently contacted us and noted that he had turned an old wheel into a ceiling light. His bike deco hack kicked my brain into search mode for another post along the same lines, and before I knew it was in full search mode for hacks we have posted related to decorations made from bike parts. A bunch of time typing and mousing through memory lane resulted in this cumulative post. If you have a bike deco hack you would like to have featured on bikehacks.com let us know. 1. Reader Matteo sent along this ceiling light he created which is featured on his website. 2. Reader Song put a bit of a more modern twist on a discarded Spinergy rim that he submitted to us. People usually have a love-it-or-hate-it relationship with Spinergy Rev-X wheels, but when I saw a damaged specimen at a flea market, I figured I just had to buy it and think of something to do with it. 3. Via the blog ViaComIt I stumbled on a great little house decoration hack possibility. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.

Any bike shop that stocks only certain bicycle brands will often swear the one they carry in-store is the best. As a general rule, bicycles of a certain style within a similar price range, are quite comparable wth each other. British Eagle, Magna or Huffy Bicycle that can be purchased at a department store. Per Rapha: From the co-creation of MASHSF to bicycle paint schemes for cyclocross star Zdeneck Stybar and Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, Garrett has been a continual inspiration in the bicycle industry with designs, illustrations and paint jobs over the years. While the exhibition opened two weeks ago, a couple image sets hit the web earlier this week—shots from Mike Martin of MASH (reproduced here with permission) and Bike Rumor as well—a welcome dose of pure bike porn to supplement the tantalizing teaser photos from Rapha. 2013- The year in review at BicycleDesign.net In keeping with the tradition started in 2009, it is time for a year end recap of activity here at Bicycle Design. For the first time since I started the blog eight years ago, readership was down a bit from the previous year (the blog had just 953,053 pageviews in 2013, compared to 1,236,847 in 2012). Since I took a 2 month break from blogging starting in September, most of those views were in the first ¾ of the year, and it is no surprise that the numbers were down overall. Another factor in the decline of direct visitors to the blog though has been the growth of mobile users. Views from Google Currents/Newsstand are not factored in to those 2013 numbers, but that is the fastest growing way that people are finding and reading the content here at Bicycle Design these days. As usual, Google, Facebook, and Twitter referred the most traffic, but Pinterest moved way up in 2013. The top 15 most viewed posts in 2013 included several older ones that were also top posts in 2012.
