Creative Scan-and-Draw Color-Changing Pen Design Any artist or designer who works with color knows that the best inspiration and perfect coloration can often be found in real-life objects all around us. What if you could take your trusty drawing pen and simply scan any color you want and then turn around and draw with it? This innovative pen design by Jin Sun Park allows you to do just that. A color sensor on the top of the pen registers the color of the object you select, which in turn is displayed digitally on the back of the device for verification. Of course, such an invention has its limitations: space for ink and batteries are challenges to be sure, but presumably you would only use this periodically and would also transfer the color data in some cases directly to another electronic advice, thus saving ink.

How To: Edge Lighting Displays - Grathio Labs Do you ever need a cheap, quick way to make an impressive display? Do ever want to show more than a blinking LED but want something easier to use than a LCD? Do you want to make light appear to hover in mid-air? Edge lighting exploits a fun property of light called internal reflection where light can get trapped inside a transparent material. Simply put we shine a light in the edge* of a clear piece of plastic and etch it where we want the light to come out. Keep reading to see how easy and quick it is to get this effect. *And thus the name “Edge Lighting” First I need to give credit where it’s due. Skills Needed: You should be able to wire an LED to light up and not burn out. Materials: Clear plastic. Time: About 10-30 minutes, depending on your tools, materials, and the complexity of your design. Theory: When light passes between two different materials (like plastic and air) at a very high angle it will get reflected back rather than passing through. Cut your plastic to size.

Kona Residence I can't speak for all architects, but I find myself drawn to the more impractical architecture in the world. Buildings designed less to fill a utilitarian need and more for the sake of self-actualization. I would almost say that this project by Belzberg Architects is more of a resort than a residence, yet the design elements and spatial order of the project are quite compelling.
