What Really Happens When You Call 911? | Your Mind Your Body While not popular to talk about, suicide is a sad reality in our society. The Centers for Disease Control estimated that more than 32,000 Americans died as a result of suicide in 2004. And contrary to some of our stereotypes about suicide, it occurs in all age groups, not just teenagers. Men, women, children, adults, older adults, and all ethnic and cultural groups can be at risk for developing suicidal thoughts or ideations, making it important for all health care practitioners and consumers, parents, teachers, children, and friends to know something about what to do when/if these thoughts come up. I talk to folks in my practice on a regular basis about having a safety plan – i.e. what steps to take if they feel like they are in imminent danger of hurting or killing themselves. What I have realized over the years, is that often people are afraid to call 911 or go to the hospital (even when they really need to) because they don’t know what to expect. In a relatively tame debate, Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel engaged in light sparring more than heavy punching Thursday night at American Jewish University in L.A. “I am not the chosen candidate of the downtown power brokers,” said Garcetti, referring to how Greuel has been the beneficiary of nearly $3 million in spending by city labor unions. “That is a difference that allows me to be independent.” Greuel said the support of both city labor unions and the L.A. “I am proud of the diverse support that I’ve had,” she said. Both are city hall insiders and longtime Democrats, but they sought to dispel the widespread sentiment among voters that there is not a lot of difference between them. “We are not identical,” Garcetti implored. “We are different,” Greuel said. We’d found one on the beach and I was struck by what astonishing creatures they are, talking with Dad about how they regenerate. Mind blown. A few years before then, I’d recorded a message for potential extraterrestrial civilizations to discover. It’s fair to say I didn’t fully understand what aliens were at the time. Now, all these years later, I’m a science fiction writer, having explored the dynamics of making contact with alien civilizations in episodes of Star Trek, one of my novels, and most recently a show at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium. Of course, that could all change in an instant. Are we alone? With so many places for life to exist, we may be closer to finding E.T. than ever before. Maybe together we’ll find the answer. States Await Supreme Court Hearing on Arizona Immigration Law Constitutional lawyers on both sides of the argument say the case raises fundamental questions about federal powers. With the strong conservative bent the court has shown this session, a distinct possibility has emerged that the justices could uphold at least some of the Arizona law’s contested sections, going against the trend in the lower courts on the core legal issues. The Arizona case, lawyers said, could lead the Supreme Court to redraw long-established boundaries between the federal government and the states when it comes to immigration enforcement, which has been considered a nearly exclusive federal preserve. If the court endorses any part of Arizona’s approach, it would provide a big lift to groups that campaign against illegal immigration, which have clamored for tough action by states, saying the federal government has failed to do its part. Arizona’s supporters say the state is well within its rights to enact a measure that they say would help, not hinder, federal agents.
