Glitch Art Resources
This is a collection of resources I find relevant to my own creative practice concerning Glitch Art. It’s by no means complete or exhaustive, and sadly, though I am trying to include as many relevant and important figures as possible, it will be impossible for me to include them all. I will do my best to continuously update reorganize and revise this list as time goes on. Databending Databending is the alteration of raw data to influence the data's interpretation. Databending is commonly used to create in sound and image files effects that are exclusively digital in nature. The methods employed in databending are as varied as the results achieved. There are many varied and undefined methods of databending audio files, some more involved than others. While there are programs available that will perform certain databending processes on audio files (such as granular synths), some of the simplest methods require nothing more than typical computer programs. Text Editor Bending One of the easiest methods of databending audio files is to open the audio file in a text editor, such as Notepad. I think with tools which inspires you, everyone can be an artist. You can try it here, change different brush settings and paint your own flame paintings. When you change the background from black to white, the palette changes from additive to subtractive and the feeling of the painting is very different. Check out new Rebelle - the real watercolor and acrylic paint program, Amberlight - abstract art tool based on particles, or Fluidance motion effect program. You can try more experiments here. NEW: This is a new Flash version of Flame Painter Free, we removed the old Java version, because it is not anymore supported correctly by most of the browsers. Databending using Audacity | Antonio Roberts Thanks to some help on the Audacity forum I finally know out how to use Audacity to databend. Previously I’d been using mhWavEdit, which has its limitations and just doesn’t feel as familiar as Audacity. From talk on the various databending discussion boards I found that people would often use tools like Cool Edit/Adobe Audition for their bends. Being on Linux and restricting myself to things that run natively (i.e. not under Wine) presented a new challenge. Part of my task was to replicate the methods others have found but under Linux. My ongoing quest is to find things that only Linux can do, which I’m sure I’ll find when I eventually figure out how to pipe data through one program into another! Here’s some of my current results using Audacity: Just so you don’t have to go trawling through the posts on the Audacity forum here’s how it’s done. Next, download Audacity. Import Raw Data Under Encoding you’ll need to select either U-Law or A-Law (remember which one you choose). Freaky!
