Practical Primitive | Skill of the Month: The Uber Match Hey Newsletter Subscribers — Sorry about the incorrect link! Click here to see the photos for Making Char Cloth The Uber Match (As featured in the Setpember 2011 issue of Practically Seeking) The ability to get a fire going can be the difference between life and death. The Uber Match is simple to make, and when done correctly is reliable, along with being highly water and wind resistant. Though traditionally made using strike anywhere matches (yes, you can still find them in this post 9-11 world) they can also be made using strike-on-the-box varieties — just make sure you have the box striker as well or you are screwed. A major trick to making sure your Uber Matches will really work well is to allow a little bit of space between the matches and just below the match head. Now onward with the process! Step-by-step Instructions on How to Make an Uber Match: Take out 4 matches, preferably of the strike-anywhere variety. These Uber Matches will strike even when wet.

28-Day Field Course | Boulder Outdoor Survival School | BOSS Join up to 11 other students and three staff members for 28 days to explore Southern Utah's breathtaking Boulder Mountain and glorious canyon country. Leaving the high-tech, modern world behind, you explore the desert washes and mountain trails with little more than a knife, a water bottle, a blanket, and a poncho. You can't get much more immersed in the natural world than on this course. Since 1968, BOSS courses have set the standard for low-technology camping and hiking techniques, where instruction is conducted with minimal intrusion of modern technology in environments that allow course content to be experienced first-hand. In line with the BOSS Positive Impact Camping philosophy, the 28-Day Field course has a decided emphasis on using renewable, natural resources. The BOSS 28-Day Standard Field course provides, among many other things, a physical test for its students. Because of the physical aspect of Field courses, students younger than 18 are not allowed.

Tomales Bay Kayak Camp Don't drive to your campground, kayak to it! Point Reyes' Tomales Bay is your waterway to a private beach with campsites. Rent a kayak from Blue Waters Kayaking in Marshall and stuff your vessel with overnight supplies that would be heavy to haul in with a backpack: gourmet dinners, wine, firewood, jiffy pop, that slightly larger tent.... (Be sure to pick up a fire permit at the Bear Valley Visitor Center before embarking.) Campsites are found at Marshall and Tomales beaches, about an hour's paddle from Marshall. Get an early start to avoid the afternoon headwind, then spend the day watching egrets, herons, and the occasional osprey. Make reservations for Tomales Bay boat-in campsites through recreation.gov.

The Incredible Tentsile Stingray Tent This is quite easily the coolest tent that I’ve ever come across. It’s called the ‘Tentsile Stingray’ and it’s a tent that can be set up on the ground normally, or suspended in the air with the aid of 3 high-capacity tree-straps. The tent comes as standard with a rope ladder and a triangular, in-floor hatch allowing entry from the ground. It also has a semi-circular, above ground hatch for standard entry (which doubles as a window). When the Tentsile Stingray is set up above the ground, the floor doubles as a 3 person hammock which means you don’t need to carry any bedding with you. The Stingray weighs in at just 13lbs when all packed up and is made from Rip-Stop polyester, Cordura and aircraft-grade aluminium. These tents only became available in March 2013 so this is a good chance to pick one up before anyone else has even seen them. Grab yours here.

A Guide to Low Impact Boat Camping - Point Reyes National Seashore WILDLIFE One of the joys of Tomales Bay and Drakes Estero is the frequent sightings of harbor seals, tule elk, and the many birds, but please respect the needs of wild animals and birds. Wildlife are sensitive to our presence and may change their behavior just by seeing us. Disturbing wildlife when they are resting or feeding may be life threatening to them. On the water or beach, follow Marine Mammal Protection Act regulations: stay away 100 meters (300 feet) from whales, seals, and sea lions. Harbor seals are most sensitive during their pupping season, which is approximately March 1 through June 30, and as they molt in July and August. To protect harbor seals from disturbance during the most crucial part of the pupping season, from March 1 through June 30 the National Park Service has closed the following areas to the public: Drakes Estero, Limantour Estero and South Blue Gum Beach. That's Brilliant! How To Turn A Beer Can Into The Only Camping Stove You'll Ever Need You can whip one of these up in a matter of minutes. They’re so easy to make and they work really well. First find yourself some scissors and a beverage can and then start the above video. Source:Real Farmacy Related Posts: That's Genius! A little kayaking, a little barbecued oysters I think I’ve perfected the art of spontaneous activity. It sort of goes like this. Wake up very leisurely. Weather is overcast but not raining, the forecasted precipitation having postponed the camping trip planned for this weekend. Suggest to Stephanie that we go kayaking (still having a discount to use after my basic kayaking skills class). We get to Blue Waters in Marshall a little before 3 (this is important, because they close at 5), and the clouds have quite literally opened up above Tomales Bay. Disembark on the beach for snacks and exploring. Justin, Banana, Kayak Stephanie, Banana, Kayak Yeah, so those pictures taken of us are on the Point Reyes side, with the California coast mainland (where we paddled from) in the background. BUT! So we got in touch with Mark, Marcia, and spent the rest of the evening at Mark’s brother’s place in Graton, drinking beer, shucking oysters, grilling meats and vegetables.

A Washing Machine That Fits in Your Pocket Designed for travelers—whether they're backpacking in Yosemite or on a business trip—the Scrubba is a tiny bag that washes clothes with no electricity and little water. The idea was born when an Australian adventurer, Ash Newland, was planning a trip to Africa with a friend. Because of all of the equipment they had to carry, from tents and sleeping bags to cold-weather gear, they could only take a couple of changes of clothes along. They realized if they carried a plastic bag, they could soak the clothing overnight, and Newland suggested they could take it a step further, and build a flexible washboard into the bag itself. Yes, this is a tiny version of the washboard your great-grandmother might have used if she lived in the United States in the 1800s (similar tools are still in use in many parts of the world). Newland says the Scrubba can also serve other uses—keeping clothes dry while you're in wet conditions, for example, or, if it's filled with air, serving as a pillow.
