Rules of the Red Rubber Ball: Find and Sustain Your Life's Work: Books: Kevin Carroll 2010 August 01 During the Google Teacher Academy UK I ran a 30 minute session on Google Maps. It was a bit of a whirlwind of a training session but hopefully allowed the participants the chance to briefly play with Maps and also to think about how we could use Maps in a different way. Here are some of the highlights: Overview 10 minutes San Francisco map from 1915 – mapping has come a long way. 95 years of progress.Classroom ideas – Google Streetview, seeing Tom teaching PE, exploring Whitby Harbour and Abbey during work on Dracula with Year 6.Classroom ideas – James and the Giant Peach, using the map to tell a story. Activity time – add a placemark and continue the story in the Story Map Practical thoughts about classroom useMashup Magic – some examples of the API use Presentation Google Maps GTAUK Page One of the strongest elements of the Google Teacher Academy is the huge resource that has been accumulated on the GTAUK wiki. Jabberwock Rejected by his family, unemployed and with no one to turn to, Jimmy was ready for suicide. But then he met the One who truly loves him. …Neo? It’s a self-describing Chick Tract. Continue reading Beaten and alone, a child dies. He doesn’t care enough to keep the kid from getting beaten to death, I guess. A particularly depressing, ugly turd of a Tract. Continue reading The thing possessed poor Maria. I want to read this as a euphemism, and considering how religious and superstitious folk have treated everything from mental disorders to menstruation over the course of human history, I probably wouldn’t be too far off the mark: “The thing” possessed poor Maria, and made her do strange things! Anyway, here’s another terrible Tract for you, hand-crafted by Jack Chick with all the talent, love and beauty of a cat throwing up half a dead mouse onto your bed. Continue reading “The Passover lamb saved the lives of the firstborn Jews in Egypt. Ah, Exodus. Continue reading Funny, campy, over-the-top.

Google Maps Mania Home Page Mental Model Building Step by Step A year ago I was casting about for a new example to use in my mental model presentations. I wanted something that was more globally applicable than a kitchen remodel, which was our old example at Adaptive Path. (Imagine someone living in a tiny Tokyo apartment trying to make sense of the task flow supporting the planning around custom kitchen cabinets!) I wanted a topic that was engaging, so that people would be interested. I wanted an example I could present to information architects in India or Thailand, should the time come. ##Mental Model Diagrams But first, let’s take a step back. With each interview, though, you must remember you have defined the scope as “get ready for *work*.” Sometimes the scope of a mental model might be broad enough that you could nest another mental model within it. My mental model diagrams are horizon charts that look like city skylines. The complexity of my choice became evident the first day. So, what are you doing tonight?
