1990s The 1990s, pronounced "nineteen-nineties" or abbreviated as "nineties", was a decade that began on January 1, 1990, and ended on December 31, 1999. Culturally, the 1990s was characterized by the rise of multiculturalism and alternative media. Movements such as grunge, the rave scene and hip hop spread around the world to young people during the decade, aided by then-new technology such as cable television and the Internet. A combination of factors, including the continued mass mobilization of capital markets through neoliberalism, the thawing of the decades-long Cold War, the beginning of the widespread proliferation of new media such as the Internet from the middle of the decade onwards, increasing skepticism towards government, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union led to a realignment and reconsolidation of economic and political power across the world and within countries. Politics and wars[edit] Wars[edit] The most prominent armed conflicts of the decade include: Coups[edit]

Cold War Photograph of the Berlin Wall taken from the West side. The Wall was built in 1961 to prevent East Germans from fleeing Communism and to stop an economically disastrous drain of workers. It was an iconic symbol of the Cold War and its fall in 1989 marked the approaching end of the War. The Cold War was a sustained state of political and military tension between powers in the Western Bloc (the United States with NATO and others) and powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its allies in Warsaw Pact). The two superpowers never engaged directly in full-scale armed combat but they each armed heavily in preparation of an all-out nuclear World War III. The first phase of the Cold War began in the aftermath of the end of the Second World War. Origins of the term For forty or fifty years past, Mr. In The Observer of March 10, 1946, Orwell wrote that "[a]fter the Moscow conference last December, Russia began to make a 'cold war' on Britain and the British Empire Background

2008–10 Thai political crisis The People's Alliance for Democracy laid siege to and occupied the Government House from August to December of 2008. History[edit] The PPP won the December 2007 general election. The coalition government vowed to amend the 2007 constitution they called undemocratic, prompting the PAD to resume protests against the constitutional amendment plan after having suspended its movement after the 2006 coup. Samak was forced to resign in September after the Constitutional Court found him guilty of being hired and paid by a cooking TV program after he became the prime minister. As the PAD was attacked, the PAD then stepped up their protests by seizing the government's temporary offices at Don Muang Airport, and the seizure and closure of Suvarnabhumi Airport after the arrest of Chamlong Srimuang, one of its leaders. PPP members and its supporters, UDD, then protested Abhisit's rise to power and engaged in a mass protest in Bangkok in April 2009. Origins of the crisis[edit]

St. Paul Miki and Companions February 6 St. Paul Miki and Companions (d. 1597) Nagasaki, Japan, is familiar to Americans as the city on which the second atomic bomb was dropped, immediately killing over 37,000 people. Three and a half centuries before, 26 martyrs of Japan were crucified on a hill, now known as the Holy Mountain, overlooking Nagasaki. Among them were priests, brothers and laymen, Franciscans, Jesuits and members of the Secular Franciscan Order; there were catechists, doctors, simple artisans and servants, old men and innocent children—all united in a common faith and love for Jesus and his Church. Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit and a native of Japan, has become the best known among the martyrs of Japan. When missionaries returned to Japan in the 1860s, at first they found no trace of Christianity.

He initially trained in Gera and at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts as a painter of wall decorations and later taught himself how to paint on canvas. After the war he studied at the academies of Dresden and Dusseldorf. Der Krieg [War] 1924 arose out of Dix’s own experiences of the horrors of war. Der Krieg itself, as a cycle of prints (51 in total), is consciously modelled on Goya’s [1746–1828] equally famous and equally devastating Los Desastres de la Guerra [The disasters of war]. In the same interview, he also had this to say:
