Visualising sustainability « Computing for Sustainability New (Dec 2011): “Sustainable Lens: A visual guide” published by NewSplash available through Amazon. How to convey the essence of sustainability in a few sketched lines? I’m wading through the net and my bookshelves to find examples of the genre.
George Monbiot – Accidental rewilding I stepped out into the sunlight, scarcely able to believe what I had seen or, rather, what I had not. I stared at the hills around me, contrasting them with the old photos of those same hills I had seen. Where dense forests now grew, forming a high, closed canopy — in the valleys, over the hills and up the mountain walls until they shrank, many thousands of feet above sea level, into a low scrub of pines, which diminished further to a natural treeline — there had been almost nothing. In the photos, taken on the western side of Slovenia during the First World War, the land was almost treeless. So tall and impressive are the trees now and so thickly do they now cover the hills that when you see the old photos — taken, in ecological terms, such a short time ago — it is almost impossible to believe that you are looking at the same place. I have become so used to seeing the progress of destruction that scanning those images felt like watching a film played backwards.
Climate Change, Deforestation, Biomes and Ocean Currents, Plankton, Endangered Species - Earth Web Site Click for more detail Thermohaline Change Evidence is growing that the thermohaline current may be slowed or stopped by cold fresh water inputs to the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans. This could occur if global warming is sufficient to cause large scale melting of arctic sea ice and the Greenland ice sheet. Retrofit with Earthship Biotecture Retrofit Temperature Stabilization This involves three things.

Earth Earth Earth is a complex, dynamic system we do not yet fully understand. The Earth system, like the human body, comprises diverse components that interact in complex ways. We need to understand the Earth's atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere as a single connected system. Plate Tectonics The Tectonic Globe™ The Plate Tectonic Globe™ The Plate Tectonic Globe™ is a globe unlike any other currently on the market. Its unique hand-crafted design illustrates clearly and accurately Earth's crustal tectonic features in vivid relief. The Plate Tectonic Globe™ captures the essence of Earth's dynamic character by depicting tectonic plate boundaries at mid-ocean ridges, subduction zones, and continental collision zones. Other distinguishing characteristics of The Plate Tectonic Globe™ include raised and indented continental shelves, terrestrial and sea-floor topography, major transform faults, island chains, island arcs, and the relative thickness of continental and oceanic crust - all engineered in hand-sculpted relief. Aside from its unique aesthetic qualities, the tactility of our Plate Tectonic Globe makes it ideal for developing an understanding of Earth's tectonic nature by making it fun to explore the surface of the planet in a hands-on, minds-on way.
