31 Quotes That Will Give You Chills - Ars Spiritus I think quotes have a powerful way of conveying an attitude to you which sometimes resonates so much that you feel ‘chills’ inside. Here’s a list of the quotes which have given me the most of these “chills”. Enjoy! Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until 75. —Benjamin FranklinMost people are other people. Ancient Life Form Breathes Rocket Fuel Ingredient An ancient form of life can use an ingredient in rocket fuel for energy, suggesting creatures with this odd ability are more diverse than anyone thought. The new discovery might offer insight into the history of life on the early Earth, and the evolution of metabolisms like ours that use reactive chemicals like oxygen. Called Archaeoglobus fulgidus, today the microbe lives in extreme environments, such as extremely hot hydrothermal vents. A group of Dutch researchers found that A. fulgidus metabolizes perchlorate, a chlorine atom connected to four oxygen atoms. Toxic Earth When combined with potassium, perchlorate is used as an ingredient in fireworks and, when combined with ammonium, as an ingredient in rocket fuel. Since A. fulgidus is an early-Earth organism, the researchers suspect that perchlorate was also around at that time and that the ability to metabolize it was part of an adaptation to all sorts of highly toxic chemicals, many of which are oxidizers.

Unleash the Fury Instead of using paintbrushes, Italian artist Paolo Troilo dips his fingers into jars of black and white paint, and then smudges and splashes it onto large canvases. Each hand stroke is expressive and filtered into his subject matter of nude men yelling and fighting. And although the images look erotic, they are essentially related with energy and emotions. Body Language By a man’s fingernails, by his coat-sleeve, by his boots, by his trouser-knees, by the calluses of his forefinger and thumb, by his expression, by his shirt-cuffs, by his movements – by each of these things a man’s calling is plainly revealed. That all united should fail to enlighten the competent enquirer in any case is almost inconceivable / Sherlock Holmes, 1892. The aim of this exhibition is — to become aware of ourselves and of the people around us. Not claiming any in-depth analysis, and hoping that you will take a moment to think about it. Sun's Magnetic 'Heartbeat' Revealed A magnetic "solar heartbeat" beats deep in the sun's interior, generating energy that leads to solar flares and sunspots, according to new research. A new supercomputer simulation, described in the April 4 edition of the journal Science, probes the sun's periodic magnetic field reversals. Every 40 years, according to the model, the sun's zonal magnetic field bands switch their orientation, or polarity. That cycle is about four times longer than the 11-year sunspot cycle that governs the level of solar activity. The new research, led by the University of Montreal's Paul Charbonneau, describes work from both his research group and other, independent coalitions simulating the sun's interior. Dissipating turbulence Modeling the sun has been a sticky problem for decades. Turbulence, when it occurs, happens at both large and small scales. When energy from turbulence dissipates, the turbulence flows into smaller and smaller whirlpool shapes, called vortices. View gallery Stopping the collapse

Apache Wedding Prayer Now you will feel no rain, For each of you will be shelter to the other. Now you will feel no cold, For each of you will be warmth to the other. Now there is no more loneliness, For each of you will be companion to the other. Now you are two bodies, But there is only one life before you. Go now to your dwelling place To enter into the days of your togetherness And may your days be good and long upon the earth. The average raindrop reaches a top speed of 22 miles per hour. Supercomputers Reveal How Spiral Galaxy Arms Grow New supercomputer simulations show how spiral galaxies like the Milky Way get, and keep, their skinny, star-studded arms. Spiral galaxies are quite common in the universe. We live in one and 70 percent of our closest galactic neighbors are spiral-shaped, too — flat, rotating disks with arms of stars, gas and dust curling outward from a central stellar bulge. Researchers have long debated whether the arms in spiral galaxies come and go over time, or whether the material that makes up the arms get jammed up by the effects of gravity and stay put. To help put some of those questions to bed, scientists used powerful software to model the formation of stand-alone disk galaxies and follow up to 100 million hypothetical stellar particles being tugged at by gravity and other astrophysical forces. This Hubble Space Telescope photo of Messier 74 reminds us that spiral galaxies are some of the most beautiful and photogenic residents of the universe.

How Do They Make Those Quilt Tops So 3D-Looking? | Seymour Duncan Blog When you walk around in a nice guitar shop it’s hard to not drool over the lovely finishes some manufacturers seem to produce. Incredibly glossy with a flame or quilt top that almost looks 3D. The first time I stepped in a guitar shop that carried Paul Reed Smith guitars I could hardly believe that these figures were Mother Nature’s handywork! As a matter of fact I had to touch the top in order to believe it was flat and that the 3D effect was part of the wood. Since I couldn’t afford a PRS for years I decided to build my guitars with parts by Warmoth and have them finished by a friend of mine. He finished five guitars I currently own and the result was absolutely amazing. So when I felt particularly confident after doing the clearcoat on my single piece flamed maple topped Les Paul, I decided to do my own stain job on a quilt maple top Les Paul body. A lovely quilt maple top I was able to select myself. Flamed black korina! A clear coat binding, waiting to happen! There she is!

Senator: NASA to lasso asteroid, bring it closer WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA is planning for a robotic spaceship to lasso a small asteroid and park it near the moon for astronauts to explore, a top senator said Friday. The ship would capture the 500-ton, 25-foot asteroid in 2019. Then using an Orion space capsule, a crew of about four astronauts would nuzzle up next to the rock in 2021 for spacewalking exploration, according to a government document obtained by The Associated Press. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said the plan would speed up by four years the existing mission to land astronauts on an asteroid by bringing the space rock closer to Earth. Nelson, who is chairman of the Senate science and space subcommittee, said Friday that President Barack Obama is putting $100 million in planning money for the accelerated asteroid mission in the 2014 budget that comes out next week. "It really is a clever concept," Nelson said in a press conference in Orlando. "It's probably the right size asteroid to be practicing on," he said. Online:

Different Woods, Different Tones | Seymour Duncan Blog Previously, the reason behind the different tones that different woods create has been explained. The different tones themselves were not fully explored and in this article I will give a global overview of the different tone woods, the sound they produce and in some cases their purpose. This is by no means a complete picture, only a global overview. The Standards Alder Alder is a tree that grows in medium, temperate climates with a lot of moisture. Ash Ash can come from various sources. Basswood Basswood is a wood that’s being used predominantly on ‘metal’ guitars. Mahogany This classic, brownish wood has being used for instruments for years. Maple This is a dense, hard wood that’s being used on necks, fingerboards, tops and occasionally bodies and comes in three major figure patterns: flamed (stripes across the grain), quilt (cloud like shapes across the grain) and no pattern at all called plain. Rosewood Poplar I can be brief on this wood. Exotic woods Bubinga Cocobolo Ebony A classic! Koa Korina

This is What Human Cells Look Like in Space Astronaut photos of Earth from space are undeniably amazing, but snapshots of inner space — particularly human cells — can be spectacular, too. A new photo of human cells in space taken on the International Space Station looks more like art than science. The image, titled "Goldfinger" by scientists, reveals a monocyte immune cell as a hauntingly translucent, reddish-orange object tipped with green accents. The human cell photo in space was taken on the station under "simulated gravity" conditions using the European Space Agency's Kubik incubator, which includes a centrifuge to mimic gravity in the weightlessness of space, ESA officials said in an image description. To create the image, the cells were placed on gold-coated slides. "Some cells, such as those in muscles and our immune system, are mobile. On Earth, the mobility of a body's cells is dependent on each cell's cytoskeleton —the internal cell structure.
