In 1893, three years after he's established the Kelmscott Press, William Morris presented a paper to the Bibliographical Society in London entitled “The Ideal Book”. Whether his thoughts, presented in this paper, were the result of his endeavours at the Kelmscott or, had perhaps led to its creation, I don't know but reading them today I'm almost surprised that the books the Kelmscott Press published look the way they do. Why should I be so surprised? The decoration might be the first thing that you notice when you look at one of the books of The Kelmscott Press, but it’s the last of the elements that made up Morris's 'Ideal Book'.
