Role Plays in the ESL Classroom - Games in the ESL classroom - Teaching English Role Plays in the ESL Classroom by Lynne Hand Instructions to the English teacher It is not enough merely to provide students with opportunities to speak in English, as teachers we need to encourage students to speak in a variety of different situations, and hence help them to learn to speak with confidence. The ideal would be to travel to different locations and carry out different tasks, the next best thing however is to enact those situations in a classroom. However, many teachers and students in an ESL class dread the words “role-play”. The effective use of role-plays can add variety to the kinds of activities students are asked to perform. Effective Role Plays Unlike skits, role plays shouldn't be scripted out in detail, instead you should give the student a general scenario with different elements and suggested ideas for complications to occur. Role play cards can be a very useful tool here. Allow them a few minutes to study the role cards and work out some key sentences.

I have done two murder mystery activities with my advanced Junior High ESL class. I found it on OneStopEnglish, which requires a membership (you may be able to find it elsewhere). The mystery I designed is more complicated and requires more preparation. Mystery Basic Idea: The twist in this story is that it is not a murder mystery; rather, it is just a mystery. The first part of the activity has them question each other in order to get background character information, possible weapons, and motives. The story contains elements of the game Clue (or Cluedo). Mystery Execution: 1) Assign Character Roles Distribute character cards + props (wigs, hats, etc) in the hall. The necessary characters are: Wally (the cobra-bringer), Dr. 2) Introduce the setting: It is now Saturday at 9 pm.

Les apports du CECRL en cours de Langues 1° Entraîner et évaluer avec le CECRL Dans notre pratique d’enseignant de langue vivante, l’évaluation est un instrument de mesure qui nous renseigne, à un moment donné de leur apprentissage et de leur cursus, sur les performances des élèves par rapport à un niveau exigible. Ces niveaux sont référencés précisément dans les programmes (palier 1 - palier 2 - seconde - première - terminale) et les documents d’accompagnement [1] . Mais cet acte d’évaluation, qui peut prendre la forme d’une note ou d’un score, n’aurait aucun sens s’il n’était pas précédé d’entraînements systématiques qui permettent aux élèves de construire progressivement leur maîtrise de la langue écrite et orale. L’évaluation, à l’exception de l’évaluation certificative, n’est donc pas une fin en soi, mais un aboutissement. En raison du format particulier des épreuves du baccalauréat, nous avions tendance, au lycée, à évaluer majoritairement la compréhension de l’écrit ainsi que l’expression écrite. 3° Aider Conclusion

What has been striking, however, is how many Americans - especially young Americans - have found the essay useful and insightful. In the U.S., the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests what American students are learning. On a recent trip to the United States, I was eating cereal for breakfast and found that the whole of the reverse side of the cereal packet was devoted to a short explanation of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the American government. So I hope that this explanation helps ... Unlike Britain but like most nation states, the American political system is clearly defined by basic documents.
