Nils Olav Coordinates: Colonel-in-Chief Sir Nils Olav is a King Penguin living in Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland. He is the mascot[1][2][3] and Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian Royal Guard. Nils was visited by soldiers from the Norwegian Royal Guard on 15 August 2008 and awarded a knighthood.[4] The honour was approved by King Harald V. Role in the military[edit] The bronze statue of Nils Olav Norway – whose explorer Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 – presented the zoo with its first King Penguin at its opening in 1913.[5] When the Norwegian King's Guard visited the Edinburgh Military Tattoo of 1961 for a drill display,[7] a lieutenant called Nils Egelien became interested in Edinburgh Zoo's penguin colony. In Norway he is consistently referred to only as the mascot of the King's Guard[citation needed], although the plaque on his statue and the website of the Norwegian Government's Consulate in Edinburgh, refer to his promotion to Colonel-in-Chief. Freakonomics » The Way We Teach Math, Sciences, and Languages Is Wrong (iStockphoto) A few years after I learned German, I got the chance to learn French. That experience gave me lots of ideas for why our teaching of many subjects, especially science and mathematics, is so unsuccessful—and for how we can improve our learning. I studied French in school for five years. However, when I went to France after college, I could barely buy a train ticket. While still in America, to get more benefit from the language course, I started relearning French. I did one French lesson daily starting from Lesson 1. Thus, I learned far more from 3 months with the Assimil self-study course than from 5 years of school French. despite spending 5 percent of the hours that I spent in school, with the self-study method I became far more competent in the language. That’s a time-invested ratio of 20 to 1. Active. If we learned our first language like we usually learn second languages, it might look like this. Active? Following these thoughts, I stopped teaching physics the usual way.

News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier In the past few decades, the fortunate among us have recognised the hazards of living with an overabundance of food (obesity, diabetes) and have started to change our diets. But most of us do not yet understand that news is to the mind what sugar is to the body. News is easy to digest. News misleads. We are not rational enough to be exposed to the press. News is irrelevant. News has no explanatory power. News is toxic to your body. News increases cognitive errors. News inhibits thinking. News works like a drug. News wastes time. News makes us passive. News kills creativity. Society needs journalism – but in a different way. I have now gone without news for four years, so I can see, feel and report the effects of this freedom first-hand: less disruption, less anxiety, deeper thinking, more time, more insights. Online Tuner How to Use the Tuner When you first load the tuner page, your browser should tell you that the applet is signed by Seventh String Limited and that the signature has been verified by a trusted source (Thawte in fact). You will need to click the "Run" or "Ok" or "Trust" button to allow the tuner to run. See "Security Issues" below if you want to know why this is necessary. You need to get the signal from your instrument into the computer of course. Notes are named as, for instance, "F# 4 -3 cents". This chromatic tuner is sensitive (it can get an accurate reading from a quiet sound) and robust (when a note is being played, it is not easily distracted by extraneous sounds). If you want to tune notes which remain totally steady for a long time then you will need to uncheck the "Hum cancellation" box, to prevent such very steady notes from being ignored. If you want a tuner which plays reference notes for you to tune to, then see the Seventh String Tuning Fork. The Tuner Controls In Detail
