Today, Pearltrees announced a new version of their collaborative library will be released soon. Available on iPad and iPhone for free, the app “transforms organized collections into beautiful illustrated libraries.” The self-proclaimed largest collaboratively library is currently home to 50 million web pages organized into 6 million pearltrees. Pearltrees also had a premium version for $4.99, which they rolled out last October. The release, which will come soon, will include an overhaul to the design and interface including full screen backgrounds, more realistic pearls, and a suite of customization tools (reusable images, galleries, improved zooming, etc.). With this new release, we focused on the visual potential of Pearltrees to let people dive deeply into their interests and nearly feel them. Since the companies founding in 2009, it has raised over 8 Million euro from investors, and has been seen as one of the more ambitious startups in Paris.
Pearltrees beautifies curation with Botticelli
Pearltrees is routinely used to embed data related to a particular topic in a way that is easy to navigate. The platform - which went live in 2009 - currently counts more than two million active users and over 50 million pearls, which can best be described as pieces of digital content. "Pearltrees users will now have beautiful full screen backgrounds that illustrate each pearltree, making the product more beautiful and easier to navigate. Pearltrees Gives Itself A Visual Refresh With New Customization Options, Major Redesign Coming Soon
Pearltrees, the Paris-based curation and discovery service, just launched a new version of its web and mobile apps. The update introduces a visual refresh with full-screen images that now automatically appear as backgrounds for all of your pearltrees – the mind map-like tree structures that you use for organizing your collections on the site. While the service previously featured a very abstract representation of the bookmarks, images, texts and other items you save on the site, the new version now shows you more realistic ‘pearls.” In addition to this, Pearltrees now also features improved zooming capabilities and better image formatting. As Lamothe also told me earlier this week, the team had to make a number of other interface tweaks to adapt the service to this new, even more visual experience. All of this, however, Lamothe told me, is in preparation for a larger redesign the company plans to launch in the next few months.

Additional new features include reusable image galleries, improved zooming capabilities and better image formatting. Pearltree is even more visual than before and I encourage you to try it for yourself, as reading about this highly immersive features is not enough to get a sense of what this application is capable of. Pearltrees was launched in private beta in April 2009 as an online visual mapping tool for the desktop web, allowing users to organize their bookmarked web pages using “pearls” as part of “pearltrees”. Après avoir réalisé votre veille et collecté les informations les plus intéressantes, vient le temps d’organiser vos connaissances pour les partager plus facilement. S’il existe une multitude d’outils pour y parvenir (Diigo notamment), j’ai (re)découvert un super service pratique, intuitif et au look sympa (et Français), j’ai nommé Pearltrees. Ce n’est pas un nouveau venu dans la galaxie Internet puisque Pearltrees a ouvert en mars 2009. Utilisé dans des contextes très différents (éducation, veille, organisateur d’idée), Pearltrees est, pour moi, plus qu’un outil de curation et se positionne plutôt comme un mélange entre le social bookmarking et le mind mapping. Intuitif et collaboratif L’objectif de Pearltrees est de créer des branches thématiques pour y ajouter des perles, qui sont en faite des pages web archivées. Les idées ainsi organisées vous permettent de retrouver facilement les contenus sélectionnés. Le côté collaboratif est largement présent.
