Profiles: The Demon-Lover “The Hour of the Wolf,” a film that is probably the darkest of Ingmar Bergman’s journeys into his shadowy interior, the protagonist, an artist beset by night sweats, is fishing off a craggy promontory on an island where he has come to live. A pesky young boy materializes and by degrees invades the artist’s tranquillity. They grapple; the boy scrambles onto the artist’s back, tearing at his neck and trying to devour him. The artist smashes the boy against the cliff, then beats his head in with a rock, and finally, with a curious gentleness, lowers the vanquished demon of childhood into the sea. The scene, in its choreographed ferocity, is an allegory for Bergman’s lifelong struggle to fend off the ghosts of his past, which he is determined to defeat, but with reverence. The flat, windswept island in “The Hour of the Wolf” (1968) recalls Fårö, in the Baltic Sea, where Bergman, now eighty, spends most of his time. Bergman’s retirement didn’t last. Ingmar was frequently punished.

Confirmation Bias The Misconception: Your opinions are the result of years of rational, objective analysis. The Truth: Your opinions are the result of years of paying attention to information which confirmed what you believed while ignoring information which challenged your preconceived notions. Have you ever had a conversation in which some old movie was mentioned, something like “The Golden Child” or maybe even something more obscure? You laughed about it, quoted lines from it, wondered what happened to the actors you never saw again, and then you forgot about it. Until… You are flipping channels one night and all of the sudden you see “The Golden Child” is playing. What is happening here? Since the party and the conversation where you and your friends took turns saying “I-ah-I-ah-I want the kniiiife” you’ve flipped channels plenty of times; you’ve walked past lots of billboards; you’ve seen dozens of stories about celebrities; you’ve been exposed to a handful of movie trailers. “Be careful. Vagina: A New Biography Georgia O’Keeffe’s work became increasingly revolutionary at the same time that she began a highly erotic relationship with photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Gertrude Stein also experienced a great leap forward in her work, both in its experimentation and its sensuality, following her relationship with Alice B. Toklas. And for Edith Wharton, Emma Goldman and Kate Chopin, periods of great creativity and daring in their lives and work all coincided with periods of sexual awakening. Could a profound connection between a woman’s brain and her experience of her vagina affect her greater sense of creativity—even her consciousness? In her provocative and important new book, VAGINA: A New Biography (Publication date: September 11, 2012; $27.99; 384 pages), bestselling author of The Beauty Myth Naomi Wolf argues that this connection is not only real—and long-overlooked—but that it is fundamental to a woman’s sense of self. The left brain is rational, and other lies you've been told about neuroscience to say one hemisphere is acting as a mere "backup of the other" is completely wrong. I agree, the plasticity of the brain is nothing short of extraordinary, however there are a couple things in your comment I couldn't help but comment on... first, a lobectomy is removal of a lobe in the brain (e.g. the temporal or parietal lobe), a hemispherectomy refers to the removal of an entire hemisphere of the brain. Although the neural and functional recovery of the patient is damn incredible, they will not have the FULL neural capacity as a child with a fully intact brain. Certain lobes are intrahemispheric rather than existing in both lobes. One hemisphere of the brain does not 'mirror' the other, there are certain 'tendencies', 'specialities', or 'preferences' (word choice is sometimes a tricky one in neuroscience) in each hemisphere. It is definitely safe to say that one hemisphere does not do anything close to acting as a backup for the other. Wow.

Raw | The Sunfood Diet Weekly Guideline and Menu Plan Green-Leafy Vegetables, Fruits, and Fats: A fruit is any natural food containing seeds (e.g. tomato is a fruit, cucumber is a fruit). Eat fruits with seeds (avoid seedless hybrid fruit). All types of vegetables are great, however, preference should be given to green-leafed vegetables. Avoid hybrid vegetables (i.e. carrots, beets, potatoes). All types of raw plant foods which contain fats help transition over from cooked foods to The Raw-Food Diet. If one is sensitive to sugar, it is a good idea to add oils (flax, olive, etc.) to smoothies or fruit salads. Eat nuts and seeds moderately. All daily menus should contain a healthy balance of green-leafed vegetables (i.e. chard, collards, lettuces, kale, spinach, etc.), sugary fruits (oranges, melons, mangos, papayas, etc.), and fatty foods (i.e. avocados, olives, nuts, seeds, etc.). Salad Dressings: For salad dressings combine a raw plant fat with a sugar. Water: The amount of water one drinks should be dictated by thirst. Chewing: Be flexible.

Bentonite clay - Powder Bulk Herb Store Order Toll-Free (877) 278-4257 Herbs: Bentonite Clay - Powder Origin: USA Bentonite Clay: Bentonite clay has been gaining popularity in recent years as an internal and external cleanser for very good reasons. Why our Bentonite Clay? Not all Bentonite Clay is created equal, most of it is not mined for internal use or sifted as finely as it should be. How It Works: Bentonite Clay is a very unique substance, formed primarily of Montmorillonite, which is an extremely flat crystal flake, that carries a relatively strong negative ionic charge. Sodium Bentonite The Sodium Bentonite has the highest Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) and the higher the CEC of the clay the stronger the negative charge. Calcium Bentonite: Calcium Bentonite does not swell as much as Sodium Bentonite and while that makes it less effective as a detoxing agent it is more effective as a remineralizer. Who Multi-Tasks and Why? Multi-Tasking Ability, Perceived Multi-Tasking Ability, Impulsivity, and Sensation Seeking The present study examined the relationship between personality and individual differences in multi-tasking ability. Participants enrolled at the University of Utah completed measures of multi-tasking activity, perceived multi-tasking ability, impulsivity, and sensation seeking. In addition, they performed the Operation Span in order to assess their executive control and actual multi-tasking ability. The findings indicate that the persons who are most capable of multi-tasking effectively are not the persons who are most likely to engage in multiple tasks simultaneously. CourseWiki - CS448B Data Visualization The world is awash with increasing amounts of data, and we must keep afloat with our relatively constant perceptual and cognitive abilities. Visualization provides one means of combating information overload, as a well-designed visual encoding can supplant cognitive calculations with simpler perceptual inferences and improve comprehension, memory, and decision making. Furthermore, visual representations may help engage more diverse audiences in the process of analytic thinking. In this course we will study techniques and algorithms for creating effective visualizations based on principles from graphic design, visual art, perceptual psychology, and cognitive science. The course is targeted both towards students interested in using visualization in their own work, as well as students interested in building better visualization tools and systems. There are no prerequisites for the class and the class is open to graduate students as well as advanced undergraduates. Schedule Tu Oct 26: Color
