Does Khan Academy Help Kids Learn Math? With ten million unique users each month and the financial backing of some of the world's wealthiest people, perhaps no education organization has more pressure to show results than Khan Academy. The renowned research institution, SRI International, published a detailed report on how schools are using Khan for their math classes. The study, funded by the Gates Foundation, spans two school years from 2011 to 2013 and covers nine sites that encompass 20 public, charter and independent schools. Over 70 teachers and 2,000 students in grades 5-10 participated each year. The in-depth implementation report showcases how four of the nine sites (one of which spent up to 22% of math class time on Khan) deployed the platform, diving into details such as class setup, lab models, instructional methods, schedules and student demographics. It includes charts of comprehensive data on metrics like the median number of videos watched and percentage of time spent on problem sets.

Course: Next Generation Science Standards Michigan is one of 26 states leading the development and supporting the adoption and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Working with partners from the Lead States, the National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Achieve, Inc., Michigan science and engineering educators have developed standards to define the science concepts and content students will need to learn from kindergarten through high school graduation. The development of the new science standards was a collaborative, state-led initiative coordinated by Achieve Inc. The process involved K-12 educators, state science officials, scientists, engineers, business leaders and university faculty members.

Category: Arduino My older son recently started school and needed his own desk for doing homework. I wanted to make something nicer than a simple tabletop with legs, and realized that I could also build in a bit of fun for when the homework is finished. Both my boys and I still had space travel on our minds from our summer trip to Kennedy Space Center. For this desk project, I decided to go with a NASA theme. Foundation Courses EdisonLearning Foundation eCourses™ are designed to ensure that students master foundational skills and knowledge that are critical building blocks for upper level courses in each core academic area. Foundation eCourses provide the structure and multimedia tools to ensure student engagement and success, making them suitable for high achieving and struggling students alike. The mastery based structure of Foundation eCourses provides a guided learning path for students as they progress through lessons and assessments. New, Dynamic Platform Foundation Courses are delivered through a newly improved course player which provides an appealing interactive environment for students that rewards accomplishments and incents students to progress through the courses.

Physical Science What is a scientific model? As stated in the video, a scientific model is a “testable idea… created by the human mind that tells a story about what happens in nature.” Another definition is “a description of nature that can predict things about many similar situations.” Models are developed when a scientist’s creativity and insight are combined with data and observations about many similar scenarios. Scientists try to identify and generalize patterns in these observations, and use mathematical language to predict the outcome of related situations.

Sounding Box #11: a littleBits Project by Caselden_Studios Make a sound box:Design a resonating wooden chamber. We took design influence from traditional Western stringed instruments (guitar, violin, cello). A big wooden box, called a "sound box", works as a natural amplifier. As the strings across the top of the box vibrate, their energy will travel down into the box.

New Common Core Math Missions Launch on Khan Academy - Getting Smart by Alison Anderson - CCSS, CUE14, Khan Academy, mathchat, Online Learning On the keynote stage in Palm Springs, CA for this year’s CUE conference, Sal Khan announced a brand new launch for US students this afternoon. Khan Academy is an organization committed to helping teachers and students by continually working to provide every student a personalized learning experience. This year it became clear that it was time to offer a Common Core Resource that both students and teachers could rely on in order to transition smoothly and successfully to these state standards without giving up the idea of personalized learning. The Khan team basically saw two options for developing this sort of resource: retroactively linking all their current resources to the most appropriate common core standard or go ahead and create a entire new library of content and learning objects, specifically to illustrate the Common Core standards. The content is designed by math educators who chose to submit their own examples of problems they created to teach certain standards.
