Apple, America and a Squeezed Middle Class But as of spoke, interrupted with an inquiry of his own: what would it take to make iPhones in the United States? Not long ago, Apple boasted that its products were made in America. Today, few are. Almost all of the 70 million iPhones, 30 million iPads and 59 million other products Apple sold last year were manufactured overseas. Why can’t that work come home? Mr. Mr. The president’s question touched upon a central conviction at Apple. Apple has become one of the best-known, most admired and most imitated companies on earth, in part through an unrelenting mastery of global operations. However, what has vexed Mr. Apple employs 43,000 people in the United States and 20,000 overseas, a small fraction of the over 400,000 American workers at General Motors in the 1950s, or the hundreds of thousands at General Electric in the 1980s. “If it’s the pinnacle of capitalism, we should be worried.” Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option. ‘I Want a Glass Screen’
How to: Turn Your Car Into a Camper Earlier this year, I was awarded a National Geographic Young Explorers Grant to spend four months driving around the United States documenting nocturnal culture with my partner and collaborator, Kevin Weidner (who helped me write this piece), and our two dogs (check out my piece on late-night Vegas). Because the grant mostly covered fuel and food, and because we needed to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time, one of our first tasks was to figure out a reliable sleeping situation that would be both efficient and cost-effective. Finding a place to camp, for free, or nearly free, every day seemed a daunting task that was bound to set us off course. We researched our options. Then we found a solution that seemed perfect: we would turn our 2008 Honda CR-V into a camper. Our platform (note the storage space below) (Photograph by Annie Agnone) The simplest way to explain the process is that we built a table. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The perks? The challenges? No back seats.

Photos: 12,000+ protest Dalian chemical plant - Shanghaiist Last week, when tropical storm Muifa rolled into town, Dalian residents watched anxiously as high waves breached a tidal wall protecting a new paraxylene (PX) chemical plant located only 20km from the city center. Though no leaks were reported and the plant appeared to be safe, residents voiced their concerns about the proximity of the toxic plant to the city and worried about future environmental disasters with the Dalian oil spill remaining fresh in their minds. Yesterday, those concerns came out in a big way as 10-20,000 residents protested outside of government offices in the aptly named People's Square demanding that the plant be shut down and relocated further away. Hundreds of photos of the event have spread across the web overnight, showing people carrying signs with slogans like "PX out of Dalian," wearing pre-made t-shirts plastered with ticking time bombs, and even wearing gas masks. Videos of that exchange are appearing all over YouTube, watch below.
