Is the web really dead?
Wired uses this graph to illustrate Chris Anderson and Michael Wolff's claim that the world wide web is "dead." Their feature, The Web is Dead. Long Live the Internet, is live at Wired's own website. Without commenting on the article's argument, I nonetheless found this graph immediately suspect, because it doesn't account for the increase in internet traffic over the same period. The use of proportion of the total as the vertical axis instead of the actual total is a interesting editorial choice. You can probably guess that total use increases so rapidly that the web is not declining at all. In fact, between 1995 and 2006, the total amount of web traffic went from about 10 terabytes a month to 1,000,000 terabytes (or 1 exabyte). Clearly on its last legs!

The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet | Magazine Two decades after its birth, the World Wide Web is in decline, as simpler, sleeker services — think apps — are less about the searching and more about the getting. Chris Anderson explains how this new paradigm reflects the inevitable course of capitalism. And Michael Wolff explains why the new breed of media titan is forsaking the Web for more promising (and profitable) pastures. Who’s to Blame: Us As much as we love the open, unfettered Web, we’re abandoning it for simpler, sleeker services that just work. by Chris Anderson You wake up and check your email on your bedside iPad — that’s one app. You’ve spent the day on the Internet — but not on the Web. This is not a trivial distinction. A decade ago, the ascent of the Web browser as the center of the computing world appeared inevitable. But there has always been an alternative path, one that saw the Web as a worthy tool but not the whole toolkit. “Sure, we’ll always have Web pages. Who’s to Blame: Them Chaos isn’t a business model.

'How Dawkins converted me from atheism to agnosticism' Clint Witchalls, Opinion editor Bernard Beckett is a high school teacher in Wellington, New Zealand and author of works of fiction for young adults littered with scientific themes. His novel Genesis, which is now coming out in paperback, was written on a Royal Society fellowship during which he investigated DNA mutations. I spoke with Beckett about the inspiration behind his writing, his latest project, and how Richard Dawkins converted him from atheism to agnosticism. Your novel, Genesis, covers a lot of science: evolution, global pandemics and artificial intelligence. I didn't study science beyond high school level, but I'd been reading a lot of science books by people like Richard Dawkins, Matt Ridley and Daniel Dennett. What kind of fellowship? There was a scheme here [in New Zealand] administered by our Royal Society, which allows teachers to take a year out to work with any host organisation. So they offered themselves as a host and I saw the opportunity and applied. Yes: August.

Will Hulu Become a Blockbuster? Hulu has grown a huge audience this year, but what happens when you compare its business to the feature film world? The social media marketing firm Buzzpoint sent us a well-designed yet daunting infographic they made while wondering when Hulu might finally become a “blockbuster” — born, according to managing director Jeffrey Appelbaum, out of conversations they were having internally about the site’s plans for monetization. We’ve broken it down below, and you can also download a full version here. It’s worth pointing out that Hulu is just one distribution platform for pre-made content, and thus comparing its revenue to that of a Twilight film doesn’t necessarily match up. But given that its October 2009 audience was much larger than the attendance figures for said Twilight film does raise questions about whether it’s reaching its full potential.

Empowered Teams Are Dead – Long Live Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose Agile methods emphasize and encourage empowerment and creating empowered teams, but empowerment is not enough. Empowerment, according to Daniel Pink author of “Drive: The Surprising truth about what motivates us“, is just a slightly more civilized form of control. This control is part of a broken motivation system corporations use that he calls Motivation 2.0. Here’s the quick summary. Motivation 1.0 is our basic desire to find food, shelter, sex, etc. Daniel Pink states several MIT studies where adults and children were rewarded for conducting work, hobbies and play activities. Pink asserts the current IF-THEN extrinsic motivation corporations use, that he describes as Motivation 2.0 is flawed and needs an upgrade. Autonomy means giving people control over how they work. Mastery describes the pleasure we get from doing what we love and following our passion. Purpose describes tapping into people’s belief that there should be more to work than just making money and being successful.

Paris Hilton In the first of what will be Movieline's many investigations into the decade, we inspect the 10 greatest talk show guests of the 2000s. Some of the listed winners were in on the joke, and some were pretty decent jokes themselves. Grow a beard, recall your favorite menu items from prison, and enjoy. 10. Bob Barker on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (December, 2006) Viewers suspected something was afoot when Bob Barker, who was at that time finishing up his run on The Price is Right, started harassing host Craig Ferguson about the flimsiness of his desk. 9. I was nervous about putting three 2009 spots on this list (stay tuned!) 8. An appearance from Heidi Klum as she dons an $8 million diamond-studded bra is welcome anyway, but when the current Project Runway doyenne looked down and murmured, "I think my bra has broken," an unprecedented wave of confusion and delight rippled through the audience. Spoon What is the difference between MP3 and FLAC files? Merge offers the highest quality MP3s possible. They are encoded without DRM using the LAME version 3.97 encoder at non-variable rate of 320 kbps. At this quality level, the sound is essentially indistinguishable from a CD. We also offer FLAC digital music files. MP3s eliminate audio data in order to reduce file size. *Note: FLAC files do not work in iTunes. MyBlogLog
